Does anyone know where I can get passport photos with a cream or light grey background in Chiang Mai. I went to the Fuji shop round the corner from the UK Consul but they only do white or blue backgrounds. I know I can use the white in Asia but I'm planning to send my passport to my parents in the UK to renew for me [ a lt cheaper] and they only accept cream or light grey. Thanks.

You are aware of the post made today in the UK passport thread

Only applicant's residing in the UK can submit their application forms in the UK. You cannot send your passport to an office outside the the country you are residing in for security reasons.

I'm not residing in Asia but just travelling around. When I wrote to the UK embassy in KL saying I planned to renew my passport in the UK rather than sending it to Hong Kong they didn't say it would be a problem. It's only a problem if you have a permanent address in Asia which I don't.

I would beg to differ with that advice. The text below is from the Identity and Passport Services website:

IPS cannot accept applications sent from overseas. If you wish to renew your British passport while resident abroad, you should contact your local embassy, high commission or consulate for more information.

It usually takes around four weeks to issue a passport overseas and you shouldn't make travel plans during this time. You might be asked to attend an interview. Please check the website of your local embassy, high commission or consulate for more details.

I'm not " resident abroad". I'm not applying from abroad. My parents in the UK will send and receive the passport and then post it out to me. When I explained this to the UK embassy in KL they didn't say it was illegal or not to do it.

I cannot but laugh at people who have so little lifes experience that they think they can send their passport to someone to have it renewed for them....Basic knowledge friend, do some more world travelling and learning. "Going to send my passport to my parents to renew it for them." Where were you educated??

Hi flash, I won't go into the issue of whether or not to send your PP back to UK just coz it's cheaper; that has been well covered B4 in TV and the consensus is you'd be a wally to do that. However, I have recent personal experience of the light grey/cream background problem (3 days ago) which I'll relate to you.

My wife needed a couple of PP photos for a "family visit" visa for UK and I noticed this new(?) requirement on the VFS global website. Off we went to our local Fuji place in Khon Kaen armed with a printout of the requirements and the photographer had his own copy of the same printout lifted from the same website! He too has only a white or blue background to pose against. "No problem" he said "I shoot your wife against the white background and photoshop it to be light grey then I print the result for you". This he did, and I coughed up a, very reasonable, 120 baht for a dozen copies.

My wife was at the VAC in BKK this morning and the photoshopped piccies were accepted, no problem. So I recommend you go back to your Fuji place in CM and see if they'll do that for you. It certainly worked for us.

I think he was educated in a lot better place than you were mate - so where's the problem???

He can fill out the application form on the internet (which I have done before). They will send the completed application to his parents, they forward that to him to sign and return with passport, they send it to Passport Office and then send it back to him when processed. The only main problem is the time taken for all this which is not ideal if you are travelling around. He will also have to use recorded/signed for deliveries which adds to the expense, but my point is that it is possible and still works out cheaper than having it done in Bangkok.

Actually I'm a she but thanks for the defence anyway. My parents have already sent the passport form out to me and I'll send it back when I get to Malaysia with the photos and old passport. I'm there for 3 months so the delay's no problem.

I've lived most of my life abroad and have always renewed my passport in whichever country I'm in but now if I have to send it to Hong Kong [which you have to do if you're in Malaysia] then I might as well send it to the UK.

From what I have read the chanfeover is the 8th March, so up until that date, I think that you still deal with the Consular section of the Embassy in Bangkok for passport renewals.

I took my passport to the embassy in Bangkok last week for renewal and it is due back on march 4th, but my point is that I have an official receipt from them which covers me if anything happens while I am passport-less. What will the op say or do if they get caught out in a foreign country with no passport.

There is no excuse they could use, as its all in black and white that you cant travel without a passport.

Why risk it, follow the rules and be safe. Its stupidity to do otherwise especially in these scary times.
