What status do Cambodian Nationals have regarding working in Thailand. Do they require work permits, are they restricted to certain proffessions. Can they have student visas that allow then to work?

I am aware a lot of builders etc are Cambodian but would like to know the legal way

I have seen nothing to indicate that Cambodian nationals are treated differently from other foreigners regarding work permits.

Cambodian, Laoation and Burmese nationals are eligble to work in Thailand under the migrant labour scheme. Registration occurs once a year, usually in June in which a Thai person of company sponsors them to work. So long as they have a health check and are registered under the local health system, they are registered at the local ampur and they local labour office issues them a work permit to work under various categories (manual labour, office work, house work, factory work).

At the moment the system is being revised, where all workers in Thailand need to return briefly to their home country (across the border) where they are issued special passports under the scheme. They then re-enter Thailand and are issued a 2 year non-immigrant 'L-A' visa after which their work permit is extended for 2 years. Our Burmese maid has just undergone the same process.

Those currently legal in Thailand can easily swap employers. Those not here legally have to wait until registration opens again around June of each year.

Thanks for that information, Samram. Therefore, let it be clear that Cambodian, Laoation and Burmese nationals are treated differently from other foreigners regarding work permits.
