Rally set for Feb 20; protest 'graduates' set to converge

BANGKOK: -- In order to pool together a million people to take part in their anti-government rally later this month, the red-shirt movement and the Pheu Thai Party are making moves to mobilise masses across the country, an informed source said yesterday.

At a meeting yesterday, leaders of the Democratic Alliance against Dictatorship (DAAD) appeared to have differences over several key issues, including the date for the rally - on whether it should be held before the verdict is read out on former PM Thaksin Shinawatra's assets-seizure case on February 26. The date both sides finally decided upon was February 20.

DAAD leaders Veera Musigapong, Nattawut Saikua and Jatuporn Promphan reportedly wanted the rally to be held before February 26 to pre-empt the first strike, while Weng Tojirakarn and Nit Sinthuphrai wanted it to be held the day after to avoid criticism that the red-shirt movement was established to serve Thaksin.

Local DAAD organisers reported that red-shirt protesters nationwide were ready to converge as soon as they get the green light from leaders. The protesters are further prepared because they've all "graduated" from the network of "red-shirt schools" organised by the DAAD.

There are 459 of these so-called red-shirt schools across the country, with 107 in the Northeast, 100 in the North, 80 in Central, 14 in the South and 158 in the capital.

Of the million protesters, 70 per cent will come from the provinces and the remainder from Bangkok and its outskirts. The red-shirts from the provinces are expected to arrive in the capital one week before D-Day, when they will be joined by their Bangkok-based counterparts.

Red-shirt leaders and Bangkok Pheu Thai MPs have each been given the job of bringing in 10,000 to 20,000 protesters, while each of the 459 red-shirt schools will be providing between 1,000 and 2,000 people, the sources explained.

Meanwhile, PM's secretary general Korbsak Sabhavasu said yesterday that relevant state agencies had been instructed to ensure round-the-clock surveillance in Bangkok, particularly in areas where the homes of important figures are located.

He added that more lights and security cameras would be installed in risky areas - a security revamp that would require funding of "just slightly more than Bt900,000".

Proprietors of high-rises in the risky areas would also be asked to install security cameras and maintain lists of building tenants and visitors, Korbsak added.

He said these measures had been discussed during a meeting with senior police officers at Government House on Wednesday.

In a related development, National Anti-Corruption Commission secretary-general Apinan Israngura na Ayuthaya said he was ready to explain why the agency had not yet completed the cases against the yellow shirts when the red-shirt protesters gather at the NACC office today.

He said some 150 policemen would guard the agency's office during the protest and important documents related to NACC cases would be put in a safe place.

However, Apinan said he did not think there would be any violent incidents during the protest, because the red shirts were peaceful when protesting at the Office of the Attorney-General and the Royal Thai Police headquarters earlier this week.

He said all the nine NACC members would come to work as usual today and be regularly updated about the situation.

Can someone please explain the difference between the UDD and the DAAD.

And this piece mentions 459 DAAD schools. Can anybody provide some specific information about these schools, for example whats their objective and what's their curriculum?

no specifics required

just numbers

curriculum? just make it up as you go along

while each of the 459 red-shirt schools will be providing between 1,000 and 2,000 people

Using schools, & presumably the school children, to achieve political goals is stooping as low as it gets.

Do these people not care about what they are brainwashing the youth of this country with?

Shame, shame, shame.

Let's wait and see. The leaders of the Red Shirts are re-knowned for their embellishment of figures.

A million people ?

Have any of us actually seen a million people on the march ?

No, the logistics and management of the people involved in such an event are only capable of being managed if well planned in advance and indeed it needs a specialist skill to manage such an event.

Land transport and water transport resources need to be utilised to the full along with in some case air transport, the glorious leaders will indeed have need a quick means of escape to hand in the event of things going awry.

You can be sure that their self survival plans will be well planned as has been shown by the past actions of the cut and run leaders of assorted movements as well as the current Red Shirt brigade..

Going by the normal level of handouts offered to people participating in these sort of events one wonders where or who the funds may be coming from and what is the possible return on such an investement ?

Perchance that the issue and the comment from the leaders of this presumed protest are indeed comparable to a urine and flatulence statement as so beautifully described by the late Sir Winston Churchill in a somewhat more direct language usage. :)

1.000.000 need 3.000.000 packs of food per day, they need water they need toilets. they need busses, Everyone wants their "fees" without some middle man run away with the money for 1000 people.

But of course it is easier to manage if they just "sell" a 1.000.000 people demonstration to their leader, come with 80.000 and put the difference in the own pocket.

Who won? Guess it clears that up then. The red-shirt movement was established to serve Thaksin.

I don't think they are referring to schoolchildren but simply "schools" of learning or whatever to be red shirts and follow the designated line ?

Hmmm I am assuming that Thaksin and his cronies will try and spend anything they have to try and add some credibility to the cause.

The only obvious fact is that either none of the CM51 or Udon Thani etc groups ever attended a 'red shirt school' or if they did that Democracy was never mentioned in one :)

Hey, come on, jatuporn promised that all their future activities would be peaceful.

Be fair, he's been totally honest and sincere in the past, never said one word which could not be substantiated, every forecast he's made about protest numbers etc., has been very accurate.

And according to many of their supporters they have always been totally peaceful and non-violent in the past so why would they change now?

I guess the 'stories' about the violent Chiang Mai red shirts is just fantasy, it never happened.

in "black may 1992" there was an estimated 200.000 on the streets of bangkok... and this was serious stuff!

One could see on the news, that it must have been an awsome lot of people!

1 million? :)

Thaskin fever!

The million figure was only used to give it a snappy english title "million man march" (funny that, since they're Thai). The more appropriate "hired hundred hash" and its likely sequal "thousand thug thrash" just don't have the same ring to them.

I think that you're confused over the word School. The Red Shirt schools are basically training schools for Red Shirt members.

I understand that part of the course taught deals with the subject of the Elite, the wealth that they have and the hidden power that they have over Thai People.

They also discuss the role of the Military in recent Thai history, teach Modern Thai history, politics and the principals of a parliamentary democracy. According to a writer in the Bangkok Post the number of people who have attended these schools and returned to their villages/towns to give talks to their friends and neighbours is growing at an exponential rate. I think that it would therefore be very unwise to pooh pooh the numbers that they will be able to assemble for their rally.

I am by no means a Red Shirt supporter, but I agree. The Yellow had their university where they teached the wrongdoings of Thaksin.

I think that is the same for the Red Shirts. Teaching the wrongdoings of the Democrats the good things from Thaksin.

No abuse of the schools for the children.

Wow ... So by Elite you mean they are teaching about Thaksin and his wealth and hidden power? Modern Thai History means that they are teaching about how their leader promised wealth but delivered a higher debt load to the farmers? How their leader manipulated the system and was corrupt on a scale never before seen in Thailand? They are teaching about how Thaksin has used Sae Daeng in the modern military history class? Principals of a Parliementary democracy class teaches that the Democrats are there legally and have the right and duty to run the government until the coalition fails or this term of parliament is finished? Maybe recent military history and parliamentary democracy class are joined into one class to discuss Thaksin dissolving parliament to try and cover his tail and protect TRT from being dissolved and how the military stepped in after the next elections failed to seat a government.

Hmmmmwhy do I think instead they are 'teaching' something far less honest?
