Failed Life In Uk Test

Recommended Posts

Hi , can someone explain why the test is needed is it to gain citizenship ? and do they get a uk passport after , also does the Bulats A1 english test have any impact on this ? Do they have to do both tests ?

Im confused ! :(

The A1 English test is a requirement of the initial, out of country settlement visa if applying as a spouse, fiance or partner. It is also a requirement for Further Leave to Remain in those categories. See here.

The knowledge of life and language in the UK requirement is for Indefinite Leave to Remain and also for citizenship. If one has already satisfied this requirement to obtain ILR then one does not need to do so again for citizenship. See here.

There is more to qualifying for citizenship, and so obtaining a British passport, than merely satisfying the KOL requirement; see Standard requirements for naturalisation or, if eligible, Requirements for naturalisation if you are married to or the civil partner of a British citizen.

but remember that the main purpose is to test the candidates English ability, and the questions have to be about something.

I am sorry but this is complete misinformation. It is not, in any way shape or form a diagnostical tool to assess language ability/level.

I'm intrigued. What, in your opinion, is the LitUK test for, then?

I did not write that it is a placement test; I wrote that it is a test of the candidates English ability.

The requirement is to demonstrate knowledge of language and life in the UK.

Read Knowledge of language and life in the UK .

The level is not B1.

If one has an English ability of ESOL entry level 3 or better then one will be able to understand the study materials for the LitUK test and the test itself.

If one's English ability is below ESOL entry level 3 then one will probably not be able to understand either the study materials or the test.

So the test can obviously be used as a test of a candidates English ability; if they pass it is good enough, if they don't then it isn't.

If one does not have an English ability good enough for the test then one can satisfy the requirement by attending an ESOL with citizenship course and increasing one's English ability by at least one level.

As can be seen, the primary purpose of the requirement is to ensure that those granted ILR have a reasonable level of English ability. Though the citizenship stuff may help them adapt to life in the UK.

And, tell me 7by7,

If one's English ability is below ESOL entry level 3 then one will probably not be able to understand either the study materials or the test.

Where does the Cambridge EL3 rest on the CEF?

If you go here http://en.wikipedia....second_language about half way down the page is a table....

This table compares ELT exams according to the CEF levels:

Hope this helps :)

If someone is otherwise eligible for Indefinite Leave to Remain but they have not satisfied the knowledge of language and life in the UK requirement when their current leave to enter or remain expires then they must either apply for Further Leave to Remain or leave the UK.

See here

As said, to obtain FLR as a spouse or partner they will need to provide an A1, or better, English certificate in speaking and listening.

Ok so if they complete the esol course to the required level, they are therefore exempt for taking life in UK test ?

So what happens if they fail this test and they are near the end of thier 2 year settlement visa ? they return home or not ?

If you wife has been in the UK for 2 years, trust me, she will not fail - for example - a jump from ESOL EL1 to EL2.

That said, if she placement tests in at EL3 (B1 on the CEF), then she could manage the content in the life in UK test. The life in UK test is a competence test, not a test of English.

Just as if you were sending your wife on a British cookery class, delivered in English. A pass will be dependant on her ability to cook not on her ability to use English.

Or a life in the UK pass.

Lets not forget, OP, that an A1 standard of English is extremely low. An A1 level of English indicates that,,,,,

A1Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has. Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

A2Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.

B1Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
