For the last 6 years we've made the 2-3 hour journey up to Nong Khai Immigration (from Khon Kaen) to do my 90 day reporting and renew my retirement visa.

When, last year, it was announced that this could now be done at Khon Kaen I was naturally delighted. Yesterday (Monday) we went to do my 90 day reporting. Unfortunately we missed the deadline day as we should have gone on Friday (ironic really).

Anyway when this was noticed by the Immigration official, she wanted to fine me 2,500b. Before I could say anything, my wife said that there was a 7 day leeway. The Immigration Officer (female) shrugged and said - ok I want copies of everything. So we had to leave, find a shop with a copying service, return, take another queue card and wait.

All told we were there nearly 3 hours.

It would have been less stressful to drive to Nong Khai where the same procedure has never been longer than 10 minutes.

What is the penalty for failing to 90 day report on time. Surely its not 2,500b?

You have a seven day window. Seven days before to seven days after. No fine in that period. At Chiang Mai Immigration they are letting you do your 90 day reporting as you renew your extension even if its still 30 days away.

There is a 7 day window either side of the reporting date.

The fine is 2,000 Baht.

When reporting at Khon Kaen I did not need copies of anything.

I've never needed copies on the previous 24x I've reported either.

She was clearly pissed we were aware of the 7 day window.

2,500 Baht sounds correct to me (after 7 days late)

The fine for late reporting (outside 7 day window) is normally 2,000 baht. From immigration website:

If a foreigner staying in the kingdom over 90 days without notifying the Immigration Bureau or notifying the Immigration Bureau later than the set period, a fine of 2,000.- Baht will be collected. If a foreigner who did not make the notification of staying over 90 days is arrested, he will be fined 4,000.- Baht.

No, it's 2000 for sure. I know, since I paid that (normally my office tells me when it's time to fill in the form and they go to the immigration for the 90-days reporting, but last year they told me a month off :), yeah I know I should have checked this myself as well, but they are normally correct. Well, I will check it now more closely :D )

Besides a receipt for the 2k baht you will also get a nice stamp in your passport saying that you paid 2000 baht for being late. Further no problems. I asked them whether this will have any influence if I will start applying for the PR and they told me no, not any issue here, everybody can forget to report sometimes.

Don't forget a copy of the arrival card and to include a self addressed stamped envelope and do it by EMS or registered mail, so you have proof you send it.

Cost for being late? Just a guess here, hand over baht 2,500 as demanded and get a receipt for baht 2,000?

Mac

I don't think that will be the way it is; the receipt will be for the correct amount otherwise the individual will risk a corruption charge. Corruption, if it exists, is within the system.

If you buy a Merc. you have paid a lot of tax and have contributed towards the budget, minor infringements of traffic laws are allowed. The cost of the vehicle can give an indication of treatment expected, normal saloon is bothered less than a pick-up. Motorbikes can expect on the spot taxation more often. The individual with reponsibility to balance the budget decides the degree to which the law will be applied.

Whether you get a receipt or not doesn't matter, who's checking receipts ? Anyone at a desk taking money directly and trousering it is guilty of corruption, you know that, and so do they, it is a 'relative judgement' not a moral one as some people see it. This 'desk-jockey' didn't have the power to take the money, but had the power to give you the run-around, to make you think about whether you will pay up or question authority in the future.

We are lucky, the UK charges Thais 14000 baht for a visa, they get a receipt, hooray.

Chiang Mai now require copies of your passport for the 90 day report. They say that they have always required copies but this month was the first time that i have been asked for them.

There is a 7 day window either side of the reporting date.

The fine is 2,000 Baht.

When reporting at Khon Kaen I did not need copies of anything.

" ..... she wanted to fine me 2,500b"

As you was on time, the 2500 Bath = Corruption or try to steel!

I woud send a short mail, with the name of the officer, to Bangkok.
