Hi all

Our first baby is due next month around 17th April. We are married and registered etc. I need to return to Australia mid June for approx. 2 months. Wife has Thai passport, but still in her Thai name which we are currently changing to my surname name.

That gives us 2 months to arrange Thai passport and Australian passport for baby.

Has any aussie been through this?

and advice re time frames would be appreciated.

technically speaking:

10 days for the Australian citizenship papers to be processed by the embassy

another 10 for the Australian passport to be processed. This can only be one after the citizenship is granted.

Add another one or two for each to get the paperwork in order.

Thai passport takes 3 days to issue and send to you. Takes about 1 hour to apply for. Both parents must be present. Child will automatically be Thai if born in Thailand to a Thai parent, so no need to process any Thai citizenship papers.

Hi. We've been through the process a few years back. I just checked my old diary and note I posted the citizenship applic'n to the embassy in BKK on 31 Oct. I was called on 19 Dec and advised the passport was ready to collect.

We had a few hiccups, due in part to the literature and/or embassy staff not giving full and clear instructions ... for example I think we were not initially told that we needed a copy of our wedding papers as well as the birth certificate, or something like that. We were also advised that the first set of passport pics we provided were not suitable, and so we had to take and send a new set. If you are not living in BKK this can be a bit of a pain, so get things submitted at the very earliest opportunity.

Thanks Samram and Bruce for your replies, I'll let you know how I get on.

How did you get on?

I am facing the same situation next month when our baby is born. I will be there from August to late October when I plan to bring them both back here for hopefully six months.

I am a bit concerned over the process period. First I have to get him a Thai passport, then apply for Citizenship by descent then get him an Aussie passport.

The Immigration website in Oz says it can take up to 12 weeks to process the descent. Thinking I would wait until I get them here and then do it then.

But if the turnaround is 10 days + 10 days then I have plenty of time once he is born in early to mid august.

More than interested in how you went and do I need to have any documents translated into English.

Cheers

Hi Wonder

Finally got everything done and we are back in Australia for a 3 -4 month holiday.

Our son was born on the 4th April at the Bangkok Christian Hospital Silom Rd Sala Daeng (no complications both wife and baby great) - sensational hospital, private room, ensuite, balconey, extra bed for me and meals, stayed 5 days 54,000 bht.

Had to wait 5 days to get his birth certificate after we left the hospital - why I don't know. Translated it into English which the Australian Embassy will want copies of (get many copies).

The hospital also supplied some paperwork to register the baby in the family house book, we sent these papers to her family your registered our son and they returned a copy.

Thai passport was easy, immigration office at Laksi, they took his photo, paid 1,000 baht, passport was ready in 3 days. make sure you take your passport and wife has her ID card.

Australian Citizen by Descent paperwork took 4 weeks to process, saying that the Embassy was closed for 1 week due to all the Red Shirt problems.

The day I picked up his C by D paperwork I logded his passport application whislt I was at the Embassy. It took 10 working days.

Wife obtained a 6 month tourist visa - no problem.

Our son left Thailand showing his Thai passport when we arrived in Australia just showed his Australian passport - so easy.

Wonder, all the best and if you need any further info just PM, I'll be back in BKK around the end of Oct or early Nov. hopefully we can catch up for a drink 1 day

Cheers Luap

When I go to BKK to lodge his application for Citizen by Descent or for his passport, Do I need to make an appointment at the Embassy? Secondly what is the best way to get there? I have an idea that I can get off at one of the BTS stations but it seems a bit of a walk.

Hi guys,

I've just been through getting CBD for my daughter, it was relatively straight forward, and the staff at the Embassy were excellent, no appointment necessary - has an informal queue system, that would only work in Thailand.

I dropped of the application first thing on the Monday morning (2nd visit - 1st was to ask questions and get the application form). On the Friday I had an email requesting further proof of relationship between me and my partner and me and my child (recent photos), which could be submitted by email, but because of where I stay in Thailand the internet is slowerer than Thai post, so I went back to the embassy on the Monday after the week-end (this time with my partner and daughter) and hand delivered more photos. They phoned my partner that afternoon and told her that it was all done and the certificate was ready to collectm, went back into BKK the next day and picked it up. So 6 working days and the cert was ready.

I would suggest submitting CD's or printed photos of you and your partner and child, and if possible photo's of other relatives of you with you, partner, baby etc. Make sure they are recent pics. And have everything translated into english and several copies. Have on hand more documents than the application asks for, and you can't go wrong.

When I submitted the application, I chatted to another Aussie picking up a CBD for his child. He said it will take 4 visits, and he was correct.

If you don't live in BKK, there is a hotel virtually next door to the Embassy, The All Seasons Sathorn, that isn't too expensive (about 1400THB/night inc breakfast), comfortable but fairly basic, but cheaper than other hotels around the area, especially considering it is only about 30metres from the Embassy entrance.

My next visit to Thailand will be to apply for an Aussie Passport for my daughter, as I didn't have time on that visit.

I would again like to say the the staff at the embassy were excellent, very professional and informative. The biggest let down was trying to phone the embassy on the Friday after getting the email (wanted to make sure exactly what more they wanted), just got the computer run around (press 1 to be frustrated, press 2 to be ignored, press 3 to repeat these options), only to get a recorded message, that was useless.

Thanks for your feedback. I hope to get everything done between his birth in early August and end of September. Als want to know the best form of transport to get to the Embassy if you can help.

An update. All went well. The hospital did the registering of the birth. Gave them my name translated into Thai. Had his BC translated into English. Submitted everything at the Aussie Embassy. It took 10 days so I went and picked it up and walked around the corner to the consulate services in the embassy to apply for his passport. This took another 10 days.

All sweet, but the application for the Visa hit a hurdle when a Medical was required for the application for 6 months TR. Once this was done and sent to the Embassy from the Hospital it was just a matter of days.

Everyone back now in Oz until early April.
