March 21, 201015 yr Wow, great pics. Thanks for sharing. One observation-there are no people! And the sidewalk shot in the second pic-where are all the vendors? (and customers...)
March 21, 201015 yr Nice, I too love old pics of familiar places, the streets are empty and pristine by the looks of it too! Look at the new paths!(sidewalks)
March 21, 201015 yr I was still in kindergarden when those photos were taken! .............................. More to do with Bankok - moved to that forum.
March 21, 201015 yr Author Wow, very nice too. Maybe you could tell us where are this photos was taken, please?????
March 21, 201015 yr Wow, very nice too. Maybe you could tell us where are this photos was taken, please????? Thought I would make it a guessing game. It was a long time ago - believe the top one is on Petchburi which was the main entertainment avenue at the time. The 2nd one shows the Manhattan hotel in the background, the 3rd also Petchburi and the last is the Giant Swing.
March 21, 201015 yr A couple of more recent ones on Sukumvit (I believe, as it is the label I put on it) in 1989. These are all scans from slides so quality is not great.
March 21, 201015 yr Another one in 1968 at the Bangkok Zoo. Not particularly interesting except the style of the era.
March 21, 201015 yr ^ is that the landmark in that second photo ? I believe it is. Right across the street is a sign that says Quality Inn - don't know if that is there still.
March 21, 201015 yr ^ is that the landmark in that second photo ? Looks like the Landmark, with the enterance to soi 15 on the rh side just above the tuk tuk where the red car is pulling out. First photo is the Bangkok bank building, was the bank open then? Miama hotel LOL is that dump still going or did it go the way of the Crown up on soi 29?
March 21, 201015 yr The Topper Club was still around when I first lived here 1980-1984. I remember they have pics of when Bob Hope visited or did his act there. I think that was in Ploenchit area? Anyone remember the Sani Chateau in Gaysorn and Mario's Pizza?
March 21, 201015 yr The Topper Club was still around when I first lived here 1980-1984. 1970 group playing there:
March 21, 201015 yr Thanks great pics, i will dig my late 80's one out. Found this link for some old clips http://www.britishpathe.com/results.php?search=bangkok Warning, you can get lost for hours on the site
March 21, 201015 yr Thanks for sharing. I'm amazed at how open and airy Suk looks w/o the BTS overhead. Reminds me a lot of the main boulevards in a lot of other big cities. Michigan Ave. in Chicago, Calle Gran Via in Madrid, many others.
March 21, 201015 yr Great stuff. I was 8 at the time. I was -6! the nana hotel and suk road pics are amazing - what a contrast to the present day.
March 22, 201015 yr Thanks for those pics, there is now evidence that lower Suk did once have a sidewalk.
March 22, 201015 yr @TywaisThe women who is feeding the Giraffe is she your wife now??? Its one of his wifes....apparently he has several , just kidding, I wondered the same Tywais....love the hair do of the late 60ies/early 70ies.
March 22, 201015 yr Author love the hair do of the late 60ies/early 70ies. Indeed! The hair is amazing! Tell us Khun Tywais, who is she???
March 22, 201015 yr RE the 1st picture: I miss the Armarit beer and, non-appropo, Nick's #1 (which probably dates me!).
March 22, 201015 yr Tell us Khun Tywais, who is she??? Here she is with her two sisters at Pattaya beach 1968. <just kidding, a beach photographer did the special effect shot> We didn't fit the TV stereotype - she's an older woman as I was only 20 at the time. We were a couple for some time but both realists as when my tour of duty ended I would have to leave. That and my being too young to know what I wanted in life yet except to return to Thailand.
March 22, 201015 yr What wonderful pictures. It reminds me how edgy and exciting Thailand used to be.
