Short version. Dinged a Civic sedan coming over Prakhanong Bridge. 3 lanes of traffic stalled. Decided to do the right thing & offer to pay for the other guys damage.

We go to a paint shop I use. The old geezer quotes me 3000 baht.

The kid (other driver) says no he wants Chip Foose to paint it & he & his brother & his insurance agent say it will cost 7000 baht. He offers to settle with me on the sopt for 5000 baht. I told him I needed 24 hours to get the cash together.

Next day I call him & offer to meet & hand over the cash. He refuses. I hang up on him. (He is a student at that hotel management school nect to Seacon; speaks good English).

Now the insurance company sends a letter - to the registered owner - you need to go to our office & pay the money. They don't say how much. Wife calls them & they say around 15,300 baht <deleted>???

Question. Is my compulsory insurance supposed to pay this? As far as I know no police report was filled out.

Please - if you don't have a helpful suggestion don't post here.

I would pay someone to get this money reduced. PM if you know a "fixer". Thanks

One assumes here you have your own fully comp insurance ??....if so, get your agent to talk to them, you insurance should sort this out for you (this is the reason you pay for insurance)

If you dont have insurance, you are in a bit of a bind...as if the ding was you fault, you may be up for the full cost...what ever that may turn out to be, and they are within their rights to get the car repaired just about where ever they want at what ever value their agent/garage deems it to be

Even in Thailand I find this hard to believe in regards to taking it anywhere you want. I suggest showing the original quote and since this was "your" guy, you should be able to settle somewhere in the middle or less if you know where he got the quote of 7k and can get a copy or it in writing.

But the advice of is you have insurance is the best one. Inform them of the facts and let them deal with it.

But again, have a very difficult time believing he could bring the car to his friend's shop and claim it being totaled over a ding and the above seems to say that is perfectly acceptable to do in Thailand.

You should offer to take his car to an official dealership for a full checkup just in case you might have caused some unseen damage to his car (electrical system, computer, etc.). Might not just be a paint job.

You're welcome!

That's a good point, there must be a bill somewhere to show what repairs were done for the 15300.

Totally agree, when it's your fault you should make sure the vehicle is repaired it's original condition, That little ding could lead to any number of problems, main dealer won't be cheap but you will feel better for not looking where you were going. Still it could have been worse, you could have hit a copper

Hope this helps

Seems a bit daft going to the garage, leaving yourself open to whatever they come up with.

I've had a couple of bangs in Bangkok (car crashes I mean) and always just got out the phone and phoned the insurance company and waited for it all to be sorted.

Is 3,000Baht in fact realistic to repair the damage?

Perhaps the guy who gave you this quote is unaware of the current average cost and gave you an estimate which is way below current prices.

Or perhaps his work is in fact not full professional standard.

Southpeel. Assume nothing. If I had anything other than the 100 baht stuff the gov't makes me buy I would have made that clear in post 1.

Just so it's crystal clear to you I self insure.

If you have a crash just call your insurace they deal with it all. If the thai's start trying to talk to you just pretent you cant speak thai or english. Just smile :) .

Or even better but a bit more extreme than that. Do what my friend did. He went into the back of someone's car. Got out his car as if he was going to have a look at the damage then he just pretented to collapse in a heap on the floor. He just lay there. Thai's being thai's didnt even phone for a amblace. Just left him lying there . He had called his insurace company before he had got out his car. When he seen his insurance company guy get there. He picked him self up and went on his way after 5 mins of the insurance guy sorting it out him.

Rule #1 to live by in Thailand: NEVER give them any more time to think you lose your advantage to out wit and out play which is all you have, make a deal and be done with it on the spot, extra time ALWAYS backfires on you, not them..

But now that you have, without a police report I don't see how they can pin you down to such a high figure for repair, any immediate photographic evidence to be had? If not come to an agreement somewhere in the original range but as many have said threaten them to turn it over to your insurance agent if no progress, even if only bluffing, by suggesting that you may break the deadlock as they see it being too complicated and the possibility of losing even more..

Well in that case, get your wallet out, as somehow dont think you are in the position to negotiate, if his insurance agent has a quote for 15k, guess that what its going to be, they have you over a barrel, unless you negotiate them down....maybe time to invest in fully comp insurance, yes everyone hates paying it, but at least your covered.. :) ...pennywise, pound foolish as the old saying goes...

For 5000 baht I could get this moron whacked.

You ran into him, and he is the moron???

You thought you had a cash settlement, but gave him 24 hours (or whatever) to reconsider...and get psyched up by his mates, and he is the moron????

Scorecard & Slaps. I hope that should you ever need advice you get the same kind of garbage you gave me. <deleted>.

Bloody hel_l, are you serious? What's wrong with a little humour?

After a reaction like that I am left wondering if you provoked the other guy into being unreasonable.

The man thinks he's a gangster, I saw your response on the My Mate thread and thought you needed a bit of sarcasm, not that I'm very good at it but from one paper hat to another I hope he takes you to the cleaners
