That must be back during the "Gent Wars"! :o

yep, am a sad git here in London.

Paul Keating as an avatar - great! :o

Australias greatest Treasurer(and wost Prime Minister)

Yeah, Hawkie held on to the top job too long so by the time PJK got in he was tired. From a Labor perspective it wouldn't have won the 1993 election against Hewson unless Keating rolled Hawke.

Good thing too though that Hewson lost though...remember "Fightback"????. Probably one of the most inequitable economic proposals ever for Australia. Would have overnight scrapped Medicare, the IR system, minimum wages and social security as we know it.

It's bedlam scampy, it does go off topic, as you pointed out to another poster this morning. :D:o

...remember "Fightback"????.

And Hewson couldn't tell the media how to calculate the Sales tax on a Birthday cake....

Thathe the way he pwonouncthed hith name Doc, Ita was his speech coach :o

Ex Prime Minister of Australia.Good to see that are up on world politics Boon.. :o

The name did ring a bell but with the dearth of Aussies & Europeans in the Bearpit, world politics is not what it could be. :D

Boon,

I think the reason why we don’t need the online bearpit is that the Australian Federal Parliament is a real life bear pit. American politicians (in public) are too polite by half. In Australia, they don’t necessarily mind taking the gloves off in Parliament.

Keating was a fantastic treasurer, responsible from transforming the Australian economy with painful, but necessary economic reform. His one-liners in parliament either endeared people to him and his vision, or made you hate him. In that sense he was a pretty divisive politician. (Check out http://www.webcity.com.au/keating/ for a taste of his insults).

By the time he got to be PM, he was less successful, as the nation was ready for a change in government and weren’t prepared to hear him out on his national strategy, which included economic integration with Asia, an Australian Republic and Aboriginal Land rights (legislation that supported court rulings that overturned the legal falsehood of Terra Nullius – that nobody owned Australia before the Europeans arrived). It also didn’t help that he was could be arrogant SOB, a good trait if you are a Finance Minister trying to bash the heads of union leaders….not so good as for PM who at least has to appear that he is a nice guy.

In terms of politician, I’m not sure if there is a US or UK comparison as the Australian political climate is a unique one to say the least.

Cheers for the background on Keating. If you have a moment, swing on by the Bearpit and weigh in. It's a bit too insular at the moment and could use some fresh blood! :D
