Yes.

My nephew did it last month.

On impulse he decided to visit Laos. Didn't mention what his visa or plans were.

He left Thailand and returned via land border. No re-entry permit, so his tourist visa 'died'.

Returning to Thailand, he discovered he was stamped in for two weeks, but with a flight back to UK 19 days later. Five days later than his entry stamp.

His choice:

1. overstay: with the risks, then pay the fine on leaving at the airport. 500 Baht/day, = 2,500 Baht, plus the 'black'-mark in his passport.

2. extend: pay for extension those five days at 1,900 Baht, (plus 100 Baht for new photos). No black-mark, and saving 500 Baht.

Moral:

Next year, for his planned return visit he will make sure he gets a multiple entry toursit visa from Hull, OR gets a re-entry permit before going out of the country.
