Good Day Everybody,

After several visits to Thailand the past 12 years I decided to make Thailand my longstay/retirement destination. I am 60 and a Namibian (Born South African) from Windhoek, Africa. I opt to make Chiang Mai my "hometown" However, I will stay for 9 months at a time in Thailand (and three months at home) .

Athough I regularly read all the postings on retirement one would like to be sure what is the best option for your personal circumstances.

Guidance on some issues will be appreciated. Chances are very good that I will obtain a Non Immigrant Visa locally. Namibia has no consular or other representation in Asia. Could I obtain a local notarial/affidavit on proof of income? Any other financial guarentees needed then. What would be the easiest way in obtaining long term stay approval without violating the rules and what documents is then needed ? With proof of income I believe there is no need then for opening bank accounts with foreign exchange, indemnity, etc, ons (and withdraw from own current accounts in Thailand.). When is police clearance medical certificate proof of accommodation, etc needed. To obtain certain documentation is not always an easy task locally. Would I be able to travel in the region with my Namibian passport with visas obtained locally?

It was said that one can do your own processing without the intervention of agents also helping to identify suitable accommodation. What accommodation is recommened to start with in CM - serviced apartments, apartments ,condos hotel, and which is the most logical and stragetic area-Nimmanhaemin or Night Bazaar area..or Which part in CM is the CBD.

I appreciate your guidance, patience and help... to get me there.Thankx

Without a local source of letter suspect you would need to use the 800k in bank account method. But there likely is another Embassy that takes care of Namibia interests in Thailand so I would check that out. Am not sure if they would be willing to issue immigration letters however.

Namibia has no consular or other representation in Asia.

Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs seems to think otherwise.
