topics similar to this have been addressed before, but i haven't found any described situations yet that are the same as mine, so here is my situation :

I am a Canadian, married for 10+ years to a thai wife, and I have an O visa (spouse class) and live in Thailand. I had no intention of ever working here, but after being here nearly a year I'm getting a bit bored to be perfectly honest. Also, several people who know my work background have been begging me to help them with their businesses. The problem is, I have no interest whatsoever in getting a FT job with a big company (the kind of job you normally need to get a work permit). I just want to do little jobs here and there to help friends, and have something to do. At the same time, I do not want to be illegal, opening myself up to being rolled and/or fined. In an ideal world, I would hope to be able to get the ability to do paid work here and there and pay taxes on it, by setting up a small consulting company with myself as the sole employee. I realize thailand isn't like that - if you don't invest millions of baht you can go to hel_l. (that's my interpretation of the attitude anyway)

any advice or tips from anyone who's done this or has solid knowledge on the rules? I would have no problem demonstrating to the thai authorities that I am an expert in my field if that helps at all. All I want is to be able to help friends on little 2 week projects here and there without worrying about being nabbed for working illegally.

Have you considered getting a temporary work permit AKA an emergency WP, you can get them for a period of upto 15 days.

The problem with this route as far as I believe is that its a one time deal per year, but saying that know of people who have got away with multiples in a year, so suppose its a case of who is requesting this type of WP and for what reason.

Maybe do a bit of research on the exact rulings, it might be an option.

bigtime, for what you have in mind the simplest company form, the ordinary partnership, might be ideal.

No minimum capital investment. Just you and your wife as partners (shareholders). If a second Thai employee is needed, for the work permit, this can be your maid.
