Couple caught with drug haul

BANGKOK: -- A Lisu hilltribes man and his four-month pregnant wife were arrested early yesterday at their rented home in Bangkok's Beung Kum district and charged for the possession of 2.1 million tablets of ya ba, Justice Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga said.

Police investigation discovered that Chiang Rai-native Ruay Dechasitthimongkol, 35, who allegedly works for Burmese drug dealer Awu, was planning to bring millions of ya ba tablets to Bangkok. Last week, police found that Ruay had rented a house in Soi Nawamin 93 to store the drugs, and decided to arrange for a stakeout.

Ruay and his wife Nanu Lahuna, 28, arrived at the rented house on Monday evening and were apprehended at 5am yesterday while loading a pickup truck with sacks, that were later found containing 600,000 ya ba tablets. A search at the house yielded another 1.5 million tablets.

Ruay reportedly confessed that another accomplice had driven the pickup truck to make a delivery in Ayutthaya and the couple had driven the truck back to their rented house pending further instructions from Awu. They claimed this was the first time they had been hired to transport drugs, though police charged them with possession with the intention to sell all the same.
