Does anyone have any experience of anterior cruciate ligament replacement operations in Thailand ?

Where would be the best place to go (Bungrungrad or others ?) and who to see when there ?

Thanks.

Hello Mogy,

Here at Bumrungrad, Dr. Panya comes highly recommended. I just talked to a patient of his on Thursday of last week and he seemed pleased.

Dr. Panya:

And do a search for "Panya" to see his credentials.

You can see more about our Rehabilitation center as well:

Please PM if you have any questions.

Many speak well of Dr.Panya and he is indeed an exellent surgeon.

So Scott, do you have any solution for knee cartilage replacement in Bumrungrad?

For younger persons, total kneereplacement is not an option.

There are many therapies such as growing stemcells, inject hyaluronic acid etc.

What kind of treatment is available at Bumrungrad?

Thanks in advance, any help would be very much appreciated.

Take care

Thanks for the posts to everyone above. Dr Panya does seem to be well recommended.

I'm interested also to hear from anyone who has had the replacement done some time ago - to understand how it's turned out in the long run.

Thanks.

Interesting question. I smashed my kneecap into a whole bunch of little pieces when I was a teenager (20 years ago) and was assured that eventually I'd need a knee replacement, but would have to wait until I was much older. Since then, have had 8 or 9 operations on my knee to clean up cartilage and am now feeling it grind again whenever I flex my leg at the knee more than about 60 degrees. Am curious to know what can be done and what the cost is...

Hello Too True,

As you can probably guess, it is hard to give advice without knowing your history and a hands-on look/feel of the joint.

For cost, this will vary based upon your specific case. However, you can see the price ranges for 2 types of surgeries, Arthoscopic ACL Knee and Total Knee replacement:

http://www.bumrungrad.com/realcost/final-b....aspx?ProcId=28 (Arthoscopic ACL Knee)

http://www.bumrungrad.com/realcost/final-b....aspx?ProcId=29 (Total Knee)

Please note that these prices include every aspect of the invoice from check-in to check-out.

If you do decide to inquiry or make an appointment, you can do so at:

Hi guys!

Scott, have you found any info about cartilage replacement therapy or any alternative methode for it?

This is a huge problem in the west amongst both elite athletes and just amatuer trainers. And of fourse people with reumatism.

The price in west for any kind of help for athletes is very high and for others they have to wait and go through lots of surgeries to just find out that there is nothing they can do except cleansing the knee from cartilage debree.

Whenever there is an elite soccer player or downhill skier injured it is always a secret where they go to get their rehab and treatment. I have read some news about treatments in the US but with various result.

Some doctor blendet the caritlage cells with bone marrow cells to make it attatch better and someone blended it with hyluaron acid but none of the treatments have been successful.

There are numerous of articles about this.

IF Bumrungrad could nish itself and become specialists in cartilage transplants or cartilage injuries you would have LOTS of costumers!

The quenes in both US and europe are long and a lot of people are in pain.

I have not found any place in Asia for any successful treatment reagarding cartilage regrowth or stimulation.

Have you? :)

Hello Comehome,

I received a reply from Dr. Panya on alternatives:

[introduction gratuities removed]

1) Inject Hyaluronic Acid

2) Cartilage Transplantation, this for young patient and normal knee axis.

Best regards,

Panya Wongpatimachai, M.D.

As it sounds like you probably know, we do have patients coming from around the world for knee surgeries, and have quite accomplished surgeons (such as Dr. Panya). But we are not a research hospital or an education hospital where experimental procedures are developed.

As for the rest, I can take that as feedback for our teams here.

Best regards,

WOW that is fantastic!!!

Thank you so much Scott, i really appreciate your help! :)

Yes, please forward my suggestions if it can be of any use for anyone.

Regarding injections and transplant:

Do you have any idea of how much it costs and the results of such treatment?

It almost sounds too good to be true. Now my husband feels "like an invalid" (his words, not mine) because he can not bend his leg much at all. He uses his leg capacity to the maximun when he is driving the car.

Thanks again and stay safe now!

Hello Comehome,

I hate to do this to you, but the best thing to do is to send an inquiry asking for pricing:

http://www.bumrungrad.com/overseas-medical...it/inquiry.aspx

My experience with getting pricing for patients is that our email response team start asking me a lot of patient related questions that I can't answer. It is best for you to contact them directly so it can speed the process of getting your pricing questions.

Best regards,

Scott @ Bumrungrad
