What Would Make You Leave Thailand, Permanently?
I've heard plenty of retirees in Thailand who say they’re here until the end. That Thailand is where they plan to spend the rest of their life, no intention of ever moving back home, or anywhere else, no desire to ever leave, etc. But I’ve always wondered, what would actually be a game changer that makes someone pack up and leave after so many years of living in Thailand? In fact, I ask myself the same question all the time, but never really come up with a good answer. I believe there is an answer though. Everyone has a breaking point on everything. Would it take a major political shift? New visa rules and costs that make long stays much more challenging? Health issues that push you back towards Western healthcare? A major natural disaster? A large increase in crime? Maybe a pronounced rise in population of an undesirable immigrant group, or maybe some big environmental issue like constant flooding or earthquakes could do it. What about if they abolished all nightlife and alcohol sales in Thailand? What if the happy ending massage was no more? Or would it be something more personal, like problems in a relationship or the simple and difficult reality of aging? I suspect some people will feel there’s no scenario where they’d ever leave, no matter how bad things might get. Curious though what others think would be the final straw that sends one home after choosing to remain in Thailand for the duration. -

In Thailand: Is the loss of one's intellectual peer group a unique form of silence?
So many years ago, now, that I can barely, or dimly, recall. I love Benny Hill, even though he may not have been included in my intellectual peer group. Year ago, while in Taiwan, under marshal law, as I recall it, Benny Hill was very welcome, and almost our only entertainment. Those were the days when Three is Company was the highlight of our week. So amazing just how much marshal law can improve any mediocre comedy show. So many fond memories. I would sacrifice and relinquish all of my worldly wealth and goods just to return to those simpler days. What good is it to have all I have now, when all around me seems to be falling down? So many Fawlty Towers, all round, falling down...... Literally and metaphorically...... -

Report Race Against Time: Bangkok May Be Below Sea Level by 2030
Quite the contrary to what is suggested here. developers are trying to remake Bangkok rather than moving it. I read previously that they have chosen not to move the city because of the cost. I wonder if with the amount of rain that falls there why they have not researched ways to inject the floods underground to fill the losses that are making the city sink.. I do not know if that is a feasible option or if it would work. But given Bangkoks yearly flooding problem surely something can be done using that excess water to alleviate the sinking problem. -

Report Fed-Up Nottingham Dad Moves Family to Thailand for New Life
In my experience, and speaking only for the UK, those who detest their own country are the least likely to be able to assimilate in Thailand. The most successful expatriates here definitely prefer Thailand but have strong connections with UK and have a great deal of affection for it.
