UEFA have just announced that Liverpool will be allowed after all ( surprise surprise since it was an amazing oversite not to allow the champions to defend the trophy somehow ) into the Champions League.

They will be entered into the 1st Qualifying Round in July and battle their way though teams from the likes of Azerbijan, Moldova etc

Or other 3rd-rate footballing nations like Scotland?

Scouse.

I'm confused if they were deemed not good enough to qualify, and this situation was always going to happen, why is it a one off rule change not to be repeated when it could so easily happen again next year? :o

UEFA are changing the rules also, so from next year the holders will qualify automatically.

I am no 'soccer' expert. But I do not see the problem with a reigning team not qualifying to defend thier title. No one would care if the Pistons did not make the finals of the NBA ,or if Australia did not qualify to defend the cricket world cup. :o

UEFA have just confirmed, that they have changed the rules, so that 'Liverpool' will be in next seasons 'Champions Leauge Competition'  :o

At yesterdays EUFA Committee meeting new rules for next seasons competition were also announced.

1. In the knockout matches Liverpools goals will count double. If after the 2 matches Liverpool are still behind then, then we will change the rules so that

Liverpools goals will count triple, and they will be put into the group stages because..... they are the holders.

2. In the group stages Liverpool will have 3 goals start in each game because.....

they are the holders.

2. In the semi-final no game will take place, instead Liverpool will get 5 penalties but their opponents will only have 2 penalties. During the penalty shoot out Liverpools opponents will not be allowed to have a goal-keeper.

3. In the final regardless of the result Liverpool will be awarded the trophy.

EUFA's decision is final....maybe :D

Must be playing against Everton then?

In all seriousness it was a good thing for football. Can you imagine that happening in another sport. ' No Mr Hatton, you cannot defend your title, Nobby Knockdown will defend it for you against Mr Tyzsu. I know no-ones ever heard of him, but rules is rules'

Well done UEFA common sense has prevailed. The only losers in this were poor Man City, the real football side of Manchester.

isnt it called a champions league ???

the top teams from the different leagues battle it out for the chance to become champion of champions ???

If a team fails to qualify, they fail to qualify, thats the end of the story...whether they are the holders or not.

to compare with AFL as an example, this decision would mean the previous years premiers get an automatic spot in the finals irrespective of where they finish on the ladder for this season.

Absolutely preposterous that a team should get allowed in without having to put in the effort. :o

I think its fair that the REDS be allowed to defend the trophy.

Be interesting to see what odds you will be able to get on them retaining it!

I believe Brazil have to qualify for the World Cup finals

in 2006 after winning 2002.

I realise that they are still defending their title in the

qualifying rounds but the real World Cup starts in the

Finals,IMO.

If Brazil don't qualify will FIFA change the rules for them?

The host nation and winners don't need to qualify.

sorry scouse but you are wrong on this one. As we speak Brazil are trying to qualify, they have 3 games left in their group. They lost to the Argies 3-1 just a few days ago.

Greece will have to qualify also for the next euro championships.

Oops, sorry. When did that all change then?

Scouse.

with regard to the World Cup- it changed after the World Cup in 1998.

FIFA announced that the winners of the 2002 World Cup would have to

qualify for the 2006 World Cup - so no direct entry for the winners.

re: the Euro Championships.....mmmm not sure exactly but its been that way

for a while, ie: winners must still qualify.

Germany won Euro 1996 but still had to qualify for 2000.

France won Euro 2000 but still had to qualify for 2004.

Greece won Euro 2004 but still have to qualify for 2008.

As far as I am aware there have been no outbursts from France, Germany, Greece or Brazil about having to qualify after winning their respective trophies.

Guess their are still some honourable teams who abide by the rules. :o

It appears that now the dust has settled the reality for Liverpool is that for them to acheive any level of success next season they are going to have to play an incredible amount of games (they are playing in the world club championship/super cup/European cup plus the domestics).

It's a big ask unless they sign a number of top players in the coming months, perhaps they could sign a few from the club down the east yanks road.
