Advice On Getting Married In Thailand

Featured Replies

Hi

I am a regular reader of the forum as it often provides answers to many questions I have about Thailand. However, this time I have a question of my own.

I have been with a Thai girl for 5 yrs now and we have a 6 month old daughter. She is currently in the UK on a tourist visa but is due to fly home this Sunday. I am flying out the following week and rather then getting a fiance visa we have decided to get married.

However, before we can do this I understand we need to get a 'affirmation of freedom'. The questions I have are:

1. Is this easy to get and how long does it take (I am only in thailand for 3 weeks)

2. If the problems in bkk continue and I can't get this from the embassy there can I get it from the consulate in Pattaya?

3. Is there anything else I need to consider?

Any help would be much appreciated

Phil

1. Go to the British embassy website & download the affirmation to marry. Complete the blanks & sign it.

2. Go it person to the embassy, hand it in, pay 2,600 Baht (I think that is correct). They will tell you to come back tomorrow.

3. Go back to the embassy the next day and collect it. They will tell you to go across the road & get it translated into Thai. However you can actually do this yourself, my Fiance did mine.

4. Either go in person to the Foreign Affairs (not 100% sure of the name) near Don Muang Airport. You can do it by post, I did, but make sure you case them up or they will just sit on it. This costs around 400 Baht

Hope this help

after you finish at embassy, go to Chaeng Wattana Immigration - when you walk in you will be met by translators - 300 baht and about 1/2 hour. Then to the 3rd floor - choose speedy service for 800 baht - turn in your documents and go to the snack bar and wait about 2 hours. Then back to the 3rd floor and wait for them to call you.

Once done - go to any Amphur to register (40 baht 2 years ago) - I did mine at Bangrak

The speedy service at MFA has ceased.

Time scales:

Affirmation to marry in on day 1, collect morning day 2, go to MFA, get translated and give to MFA officer.

Collect on day 3. Now goto Amphur and get married. Amphur in Bangsue no charge, but a nice tip cause

the officers are very friendly, do not forget witnesses (2 required at Amphur).

3 days for the leg work, the rest of the time enjoy yourself, happy honeymoon.
