SET will be bullish in 2nd half, says top analyst

BANGKOK: -- The investment in the Stock Exchange of Thailand will be bullish in the second half of this year, boosted by an expected 10% growth in profits of listed companies, according to a leading securities analyst.

Kongkiati Opasvongkarn, President of the Securities Analysts’ Association, said although the investment sentiment had been affected by negative factors including rising oil prices and higher interest rates, the market had already absorbed them as witnessed by a sharp decline in prices of many stocks.

So, he saw no need to revise the projection that the market sentiment would remain favorable in the second half of the year.

However, he said what he was concerned most was untoward incidents like the outbreak of avian flu and the tsunami disaster late last year since they are uncontrollable factors and investors could not prepare themselves for repercussions.

He said the oil price hike had wide-ranging impacts on the countries the world over and resulted in the global economic slowdown.

“I want Thai people to accept the truth that hefty oil prices won’t go down like in the past. They must help save energy consumption. Operators need to improve production efficiency to maintain return rates.”

Dr. Kongkiat, who is also chairman of the Thai Capital Market Business Council, pledged to promote the stability of the Thai bourse in the long run with an emphasis on giving knowledge to investors.

He said the council would attempt to boost competitiveness and strength of listed companies in preparation of the establishment of the free trade area in financial and service sectors.

It would pursue social contribution activities such as continued assistance for victims of the six tsunami-affected provinces in the southern Andaman coast.

Dr. Kongkiati also warned investors to be cautious in buying some stocks for speculative, saying they lack fundamental support.

It seems to me that if too many investors actually did have 'knowledge' of how the SET really worked, that would do anything BUT promote stability. Panic maybe, but stability? Hardly.
