I have been working and living in Chiang Mai for about 10 years and I am coming down to Samui in a couple of weeks with my girlfriend of 8 years (before the get to know her for at least a month first advice starts flowing) haha...... The idea is to find an opportune moment to pop the question while we are there... I have been down in Samui many times but the place changes so quickly and local knowledge helps.

We already have the resort booked but do any of you local guys know any great spots/hideaways that could serve to carry out this rediculous act???? Any advice would be greatly appreciated..... I am fully expecting flack over this post so take your best shot and if you check some prat on a knee over the next couple of weeks, don't heckle to hard..... !!!!!

If it's a Thai chick, don't bother, not their tradition.

If it's a western girl, do a private boat trip to the islands, deserted beaches ....... do it on the beach.

The Sala Samui (Choeng Mon beach) has a great restaurant, and they used to have a table in the swimming pool (yes really).

Excellant food and good service. Get the waitress to bring the ring on a plate for the desert course. This will save you from having to get your knee wet. :-)

Easy head to the Jungle club in Chaweng Noi, ask around how to get there most will know. Sit back in a sala and enjoy the views. Good luck !!

You have already been offered some good advice but it might be helpful if you were more specific about the type of setting you are after. Fancy restaurant, deserted beach, sunset on a boat etc etc

A friend who is a diving instructor took a Korean couple diving to Koh Tao. The guy then proposed to her underwater with some slates and my mate whipped out the ring. He even arranged a videographer to go along and capture the moment on film. As Carmine says a little more info on what type of setting you are after would help.

The place to go for your Farang food fix!

The islands Premier Farang food Outlet!

These are all goodies and yeah, apologies for being vague..... No, not really looking for a restaurant to be honest, more of a decent vista, sunset would be good. The diving idea sounds great but as she hasn't done her PADI yet it might ruin the moment whipping out the ring surrounded by sweaty germans in the pool...... haha.. (No offence to Germans of course)... I know a boat trip would be a good one but I was just wondering if anyone knew any secluded hideaways you don't find in the Lonely Planet........ All ideas are welcome at this stage though!!!!!!!

Nikki Beach? On the west coast just south of Nathon. Fabulous sunsets.

Kind of a hip and trendy place. Go there for a late afternoon drink and then a stroll along the beach, sit under a palm tree at the waters edge and do the business. PM me if you want a 'local' to wander past with a bottle of champagne at the right moment.

Ah ha, now we are talking, this is kind of what I was looking for. That is definately a worker and I will bear that one in mind... Many thanks...... Any more ideas are still appreciated.... Careful with the Champers concept, I may take you up on that before to calm the nerves....... haha

Be very careful which local you give a ring to, you may never see it again.

someone said it already, it's not a Thai tradition here. So it could be, that, if she is Thai, her reaction will be rather confused than amazed.

Mr carmine, you never struck me as being the sort of man who would know a lot about going down on 1 knee, i always thought that you were more the type to go down on 2 knees :D.

unless your girlfriend has been in a cave for all her life with no access to foreign media she is probably expecting you to go on one knee and pop the question 'farang' style. she would probably be disapointed if you didn't.

imho.

u popped the question yet?? ......

No not yet, I am going down there soon though. I am leaning towards the Nikki Beach idea but thank you all for the help..... Fingers crossed . ...

Nikki Beach Club is very slick and I would suggest not romantic at all ... Like proposing in a disco near the beach ...

Right. Restaurants. Either on the beach or with a stunning view. Quiet, romantic and no pounding music or wandering troubadours.

Jungle Club is better for honeymooners. It's way up high, utterly secluded but with great views. Very private.

SALA Samui caters for honeymooners also. All the villas are walled and with private pools. Not really the spot to propose ... the table in the pool is nice, but it's a pretty bland setting.

Tied together on the bungy jump? The two of you on a 4-wheel quad bike up into the jungle to "discover" a velvet-lined box with a ring in it?

One of the most romantic settings is at Six Senses Hideaway - but also expensive. A day with a 2-person spa session and then the spectacular "Dining on the Rocks" for dinner. I could maybe fix it so that the executive chef and his kitchen staff turned out to serve you the ring on a plate ... (at no cost to you!)

What about hiring a luxury villa for 2 days? In Bang Po, near Oasis Health resort there are several handled by Coconut Land and House. It would be about the same cost as staying at the Six Senses for a night! "Coconut Tropicana" (I think) is right next to a delightful beach seafood restaurant (I forget the name - Jun Hom??) - it's got a deck that juts out over the sand into the sunset. You could take her there, have a meal and already (unknown to her) have arranged for a pair of fire jugglers to entertain. Wine, dine and return down the beach to have a singing telegram to deliver the ring to her ... or how about a clown who did a routine with bendy balloons and fell into your pool a few times before handing the ring over ...??

I know most of the beach resorts and restaurants in Mae Nam (I'd avoid Chaweng - the beach is too public and busy even at night). ZAZEN is very pleasant. Even The Florist (two star!) in Mae Nam is very nice and on the beach. But I'd suggest that you took somewhere average/nice to stay then concentrated at setting up the EXTRAS to make the stay unforgettable. A clown, fire jugglers, fireworks, fire balloons, flaming ladyboys - alight or shot from cannons - tack these things onto your Samui resort stay.

Hope it helps - PM me for any more info.

Joy n bliss dude!
