Hello wise and venerable forum dwellers!

I'll be heading to Thailand for a few months and I have no idea where I'll end up or what I'll do. I have three constraints:

* I work online, so I will need constant access to high-speed internet wherever I stay;

* I would love to find some kind of weekly or monthly rental deal to save some cash (here in Brazil we have something called a Pousada--it's somewhere between a hotel and an apartment);

* I would like to be near some good nightlife;

I think my work requirements will force me to stick around urban areas, but I don't necessarily want to be in the middle of Bangkok the whole time I am there. Any suggestions for alternative locations with good infrastructure and nightlife, but maybe a little off the beaten path?

What about housing? What options are there for weekly or month-to-month rentals?
