hi guys!

I've just signed up here, cz I heard it's quite okay here and I wanted to get some informations about samui :)

Well, I am from Germany and visited samui and other places of thailand in the late 80s.

long way from nathon to chaweng - but it was it worth.haw

So I heard this beautiful place doesn't really exist anymore, I heard storys of people where I didn't know what to think about, so I looked up in the web.

I am considering to visit samui with my wife and my daughter, maybe next year. Am just curious. of course it won't be the same. I remember really really good times, private campfires with thai people on the beach, pipes with ganja without anyone even thinking about "pressing money out of you". I was in my end-twenties and it was great!!

no roads, friendly people, no stress, easy good life.

I heard it changed so much and it ran by western bikies and local thai mafia groups and several actions are made to "cover" everything (eg: charity etc.)

Any samui residents here? Anyone who has got a business there, honestly, what experiences have you made?

Is it worth visiting Samui? Too crowded? I just heard and read about non sustainable building booms, greed etc. and the power mainly have got western bikie groups from abroad (to launder dirty money) and build up businesses and the island should be completely run by them.

Hope to get some answers, maybe better switch to Ko Tao, dunno yet.

Best,

Mike

sorry for double posting,

I am doing that for the first time.

Admin/Mod please close one of the two topics, thank you.

Probably find it has changed a bit my friend. Western bikie gangs and mafia? Have you been reading too many Mickey Spillane novels again. Easy does it

no haven't read any novels by him, don't know this author.

I've heard it from friends who talked about it and please dont come with "dont believe anything what people talk" - sure that - just wondering, cz many different sources say similar things, ok?

dont believe anything what people talk, come here, stay at Menam if you awant to, there are some places where time stand still

The Samui that you knew has gone. And it is NOT in Koh Tao either. (Terrible place unless you want to dive.)

However, there are still a lot of nice friendly (almost) cheap places on Samui.

Yes there is Mafia - it is everywhere in Thailand. As long as you don't do - drugs/gambling/illegal scamming then the only 'mafia' that you will meet are the taxis. (Fixed prices and rip offs after midnight.)

If you have a family - try Choeng Mon (best beach by far) and Maenam. Both quiet, cheap and friendly. Bang Rak has good restaurants too - but not a great beach

yes cheers, maenam sounds really nice, I just saw some pictures.

thanks for the private messages. dont worry, i will not show them. gave me a different view....

didnt expect that this changed SO heavily.

Yes, very nice. thank you.

I think Ko Tao would be too boring for my daughter, and maybe for me too. Why is it terrible?

Maenam sounds nice, what about Bang Po beach?

and yes, mafia is everywhere in thailand. in the 80s it was just more relaxed and you could TRUST (at least 90%) what people said ... for example: those stories like existing organized protected drug sellers, making some thais work for them to sell small amounts of personal use of dope, then going to the police and press you out - make me shock. that would have NEVER existed at these times. there was a mafia as well, but not foreigners. its just part of their culture (corruption).

i mean many brothels or A-go-go-bars are (part)owned by westerners and they have to pay to police, cz it's illegal in thailand. but its broadly used :-)

What about ko phangan? We didnt go there, stayed on Chaweng - as I said - wonderful - digged holes in the sand, collected some wood , made a bonfire with thais, talked, had fun, drank and smoked. Easy. No fear of any snitches or anything. I don't know if you can imagine. this place had something magic. I will never forget this boat ride to nathon and the long way in the heat to chaweng.

Well I dont know what Ko Phangan is like, this fullmoon hype does not interest me, so I think we might chose samui.

choeng mon looks also nice from the pictures, but a little bit stony?!.

i would appreciate some more infos . I have such great memories. bonfire and sunsets. I think buying something to smoke for myself and my own is impossible these days. snitchers anywhere I heard ... it's just sad cz i can't drink alcohol.

thanks for your answers. bye!

Friend the Thailand that you are describing has long been gone

I came here in 1984

I remember a much different country

Phangan, not a week goes by you do not read about some foreigner arrested for drugs

There is trashed dumped along the roads everywhere

It is over commercialized and every single person is looking to make a buck

For a family it is not the place to go AT ALL

Try Koh Chang on the East Side of Island

You can still find what you are describing

There is no development at all on the east side of Koh Chang

Last week the beaches were empty even on the developed side
