My friend wants to buy an engagement ring in Pattaya. What is the price range? Can anyone recommend a reputable store?

1st Jewellery store on the left Walking Street.

Was there when a lady had bought a ring an hour before decided she didn't like it and the guy checked the ring and gave her a full refund.

Told my wife he does good business with tourists and doesn't want a bad name.

Hence when you go there you will understand great service, guarantees and hopefully one happy bride to be.

Congratulations to you both!

knowledge is the power. weight of gold ( in gr.) multiply by number written on window ( some 5xx Baht ) + 500Baht extra + price for stones (ask streight, don't shy, re-check) = your ring.

After purchase of 30K up , get detailed certificate, check stones ( 1K baht - full report)

There's no such thing as honest thai jeweller, don't be fool.

good luck to your friend

Get real of course there a reputable jewllers that's why you have the guarantee cerificate and yes get it checked independently.

They could write any price on the shop window .

What a stupid response. They could give you cubic zirconia's instead of diamonds.

Would you know?

That's why I recommend this shop. EXPERIENCE.

Give the guy a shop you recommend or if you have nothing positive offer why post

Diamond engagement ring? I don't know if they carry diamonds. Try H. Sang International Gems up Walking Street on the right hand side just before the Nang Nual restaurant. Custom work is not a problem. Everything checked out fine for me. They have rings set with stones in the glass cases too and loose graded gems with certificates or just standard grade stones. Pricing gems is tricky business you must negotiate. Take a loop to view the stones although they have loops you can use. The old man is retired now so you will proabably be dealing with his wife. Imagine that.

If you are not spending alot of money you can't get hurt too bad.

Congrats to the couple.

Well for starters, the price range can be almost anything, depending on what you want. Plain, 1 baht gold ring ? Maybe 8,000+ baht. Fancier, larger ring ? Obviously, more money.

Want a ring with stones in it ? What kind, emeralds, diamonds, rubies ? Of course, it depends on what you want, how big you want, how many you want.

The primary factor will be, How much is your friend willing to spend on an engagement ring ?

Reputable stores ? I rarely buy jewellery for myself. If I do buy something, I like to go to the same shops that the Thai's go to.

I have bought from that first gold shop on the left on Walking Street. Only chains though. My Thai friends think that place charges too much though, as it caters to mostly tourists.

If your friend knows someone who speaks Thai (that he can "trust"), they can help make sure he doesn't get shafted.

One suggestion that was made to me was to go with a Thai friend and pick out what you wanted, but not buy it. Then have the friend go back the next day to buy it. The idea being that if the shop doesn't see a farang standing there, the price may be somewhat lower. Haven't tried that yet (make sure you trust your "friend" though !).

Most of the gold dealers are reputable. I bought some jade from gem/jewelry store on corner of Beach road prior to entering walking street. Very reputable in my opinion and did great work. Give them a try.

As previously said prices can vary considerably depending on the jewellery store, the type of stones, the quality of the stones, the clarity etc.

I have bought from a number of Pattaya stores over the years and I have found that the large impressive stores are the most expensive and yet the quality of the product may not be any better that some of the smaller stores.

If the ring is to contain diamonds of good size and quality then there are few bargains to be had in Pattaya.

However for emeralds saphires and small diamonds set in 18 carat gold then these objects can be obtained at generally better prices than in the west.

You will find that the larger jewellery shops will not on the whole give as much discount as the smaller shops, which at this time of year need every sale that they can get.

One shop which I have used recently and where you are able to negotiate a good price I have listed below....

One of the items which I purchased in May was originally 49,000 baht and I obtained it for 21,000 baht, a price that I was happy to pay.......yes the profit mark up is well loaded at the front end in the majority of shops..... If you are just buying gold from a mainly gold retailer then the price that you will pay will depend on the weight of the item plus a little for the workmanship and there is nothing or little in the way of discounts on the prices of these gold objects.

The shop which I will recommend is Gems & Diamond manufacturing co ltd. 226/2 Pattaya Beach Road. It is located between Soi 4 and 5 just before the corner of Soi 5.

You will find friendly helpful service here....don`t forget to bargain hard and get a certificate detailing the item purchased.

Happy shopping. :o

Have used Tom's Gems for about 12 years now. Coming from Beach Road they are about 250 yards on the right in Walking Street. Very friendly and honest.

BEST GEMS

Soi Yodsak 437/3-4 Moo 9

Phatthaya City, Chonburi

ph. 429-115, 429-399

This business is 1st class. Friendly, good english, top quality diamonds and other gems. I bought an engagement ring there and my son bought a wedding ring set with diamonds as well as some saphire stones. I went back there a couple of months ago and bought a high quality orange saphire stone. 1.65 ct. I had shopped at least a dozen shops looking for this type of stone and could not find one. I went as far north as Chiang Mai and looked there too. The owner of a large gem store in CM told me that she had great difficulty finding an orange saphire for herself.

I will probably be going back to Best Gems to trade back my finacee's engagement ring for a bigger diamond. We plan to return to the USA together on September 3. I can't believe the difficulty getting a fiancee to the USA.

If you go to this shop, say Hi! from Don and Narissa. Also from David and Sara.
