Maybe Thai travel forum is appropriate, but this will elicit replies I'm sure. Move if you wish, mods.

Planning a 5 day trip up to the north west. Have already found suitable accomodation near Pai for the first couple of nights, but guide books and websites don't seem to have many suggestions for places to stay around Mae Hong Son.

Anyone have any ideas for accomodation near MHS, please? Looking for something where you get a couple and child in one room for between 1000 and 1500 baht. Guest house / hotel names, phone numbers, web addresses will be gratefully received.

Will be heading back south using the Myanmar border road towards Tak, so if there's anything a little out of MHS on this road, then that could well be suitable.

Thanks.
Try the Piya GH which is in the center of town right next to the lake. Ask for one of the big bungalows (same price as the smaller ones) - price about 600 Baht. Contact details 1/1 Khunlumphrapat Soi 3, Mae Hong Son. T: (053) 611 260 F: (053) 612 308

You can also have a look at http://wikitravel.org/en/Mae_Hong_Son for more accommodations and things to do in Mae Hong Son

www.travelfish.org.com is another good web site for Asian travel. We have found their reviews pretty spot on.

I could also recommend the Residence, walking distance to/from the airport if you travel light. It's about a kilometre from the centre of town and market, and well worth the B900 without breakfast. The tuk tuk drivers are running a cartel, B50 to/from even though it's only a few hundred metres to walk.

A retired guy and his wife from Bangkok run it, only about five rooms, very clean, great bathroom, free wifi internet. He's a particularly nice chap, she's a little more the hardnosed businesswoman.
