Anyone remember Samphire seaweed the shoots picked off Norfolk beaches. Delicious steamed with olive oil. Is there any Asian eqiuvalent

I lived right on the North Norfolk coast and we could just nip down the lane at the back of the house and pick Samphire on the saltmarsh. If you couldn't be bothered to go that far, the local shop sold a huge carrier bag full for 50p (that's 25 baht at today's rate). Delicious, steamed with butter and black pepper....

I once saw Samphire at Dean & DeLuca in New York. They advertised it as Sea Asparagus and it was outrageously expensive! Haven't seen anything quite like that here though, but the asparagus is good and well priced - guess we'll just have to make do with that.
