Confuse And Bemused....Help Please!

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

As a result of the recent problems with download speeds etc I decided to try to work out what I am paying, and for what, and can I get an improvement in any way. Currently I pay 1090 Baht per month for "Triple B" (formerly Triple T) "Premium Service", upto 3 meg speed.

I went into the BBB office here in Chiang Mai, and noticed they were offering what is described as "Indy Package", upto 8 meg for 950 Baht...ie less than I am currently paying for "Premium Service"

Heres the answer, I thought, but on approaching the sales staff with a view to changing my package for the apparently higher speed, they told me that "Indy" is only good in Thailand for people using mainly Thai sites, and for International use ( I do do a lot of torrenting) the Premium Package is much better.....despite, to my simplistic interpretation, the Indy package offering more speed for less money??

Can anyone help/ offer advice/ guidance? Does the "Indy " package theoretically offer more speed but gets shared by more people thus slowing it down? Does the "Premium" service provide less speed but more exclusive use??

Any thoughts greatly welcomed, because, hey ho, I dont know...am I in fact being bullshitted here or what??!! Thanks all!!

The premier package has a lower user/contention ratio and more international bandwidth. Basically it geared to those folks who need to frequently access/surf web sites outside of Thailand, such as expats living in Thailand.

Does the "Indy " package theoretically offer more speed but gets shared by more people thus slowing it down? Does the "Premium" service provide less speed but more exclusive use??

Yes to both questions.

Although the Indy speed is a higher connection within Thailand, it does not provide for an increase the speed outside Thailand. Nor does it offer an overall higher speed within. It's a marketing gimmick designed to fool.

Overall speed is affected by the number of people per server. The Premium service has less people per server and thus offers better overall speed.

"they told me that "Indy" is only good in Thailand for people using mainly Thai sites, and for International use ( I do do a lot of torrenting) the Premium Package is much better...."

I see two different issues here:

# international use = surfing to IP addresses outside of Thailand

# using torrents

Some ISP's throttle the speed on the common ports used for torrent streams, this is quite common in many countries

in order to prevent users to use too much bandwidth on so-called "unlimited" subscriptions

As for normal HTTP surfing to non-thai IP-addresses it might be possible that they have a limited amount of bandwidth

to the few servers ( not run by them ) who connects Thailand to the outside world. But to determine if that's true one

needs to know the detailed structure of Thailand's internet network, inter-ISP communication etc. which I don't, so I stop

by saying it MIGHT be possible..

I know that all international traffic is filtered here but I think it is on a DNS basis, which shouldn't affect bandwidth..

Maybe they were referring to torrent-throtteling only ?

[ and as I was writing this I see some enlightened individuals have already sorted it out, thanks ] dry.gif
