I wanted to move my money from one branch to Bangkok Bank (downtown) to a branch closer to the house. They said I needed a work permit, opened my passport and showed my retirement extension, and then it was no problem.

Recently opened a bank account at Kasikorn bank Silom branch. They did ask for a work permit but when I showed them my passport and proof of address everything was fine. Received my Visa debit card after a few minutes.

All you need is your passport. If one branch says no just go to another tell one says yes. Its that simple. Bank accounts are opened every day in Thailand with just a 30 visa exempt stamp in a passport

SCB opened account for me no problem with passport. However, I needed a WP to get a cheque book

All banks in Thailand require a one year extension based on a WP, marriage ,retirement etc. for a checking account. If you wright a bad check they have a way to get you.

How much they ask to open a bank account ?

Will they give you internet banking ? And if they do, is the software or web site in english ?

Yes Kasikorn will give you cyber banking , you just have to ask for it. Website is in English or Thai so no problems to use.

They will ask for your email and phone number , then you will receive your user id and password.

I know if a Thai went to Canada on a 30 day visit visa and tried to open an account at ANY bank it would be impossible. Most likely any other country as well.

When I arrived here 10 years ago you could ONLY open an account5 with the SCB and that is if you had a WP and one of the Thai's from your company went to the bank withyou and gaurrantored your account.

Now a days it seems like anyone will give you an account but with a 30 day visiting visa I have NEVER heard of this. I also thought that a Farang cannot get a checking account even with a WP? You are still considered a "visitor" to Thailand even with WP, Marriasge visa etc are we not?

The funny thing that I am thinking is who the He_ll is going to take a check from a farang? Certainly not me hahahaha
