Hey guys (and F1fanatic ;) ),

What with the mid-season summer break in progress, it seems like a good time to stick one's neck on the line and make a prediction.

It being so closely fought this year, it's a tricky thing to do!

I haven't included Massa as his team has decided he is out of the challenge. And those below Massa i think we all agree don't have the cars to make up their point deficits.

Get your votes in before Spa!

Well I plumped for Vettel, I did go on record before season started as napping him. Although my heart tells me that I would prefer Webber or anyone else who has not won a world championship to date. Would like to see some new faces on the rostrum!.

Quite liked Vettel at the beginning of the season but he appears to be set on moving up the bratometer! :shock1:

Who would I like to see win Webber, a great all round racer.

Who do I think will win it Hamilton, a guy who can make the best of a bad car and still bring it home on the podium

Vettel has shown himself to be a great qualifier but an average racer and one that is developing an attitude as well. I think he needs another season to get it right but next year he will be one to beat. That's if he can get rid of the attitude ;)

I voted for Vettel because i think he's a good driver and he's got the strongest all round package. If it weren't for a few mechanical failures at the begining of the season and a couple of driving errors more recently, he would have a handsome lead now. If he and Red Bull can start delivering consistently, it's his for the taking this year.

As far as who i'd like to see win it goes, no surprises, my answer is Lewis. Not only a great driver but an exciting one - one that likes to take risks. A driver i'd pay money to see race because he has me on the edge of my seat most of the time.

Anyway, may the best man win!

I voted for Alonso.

He is the only driver to have full support from his team ( as we saw at Germany ) and has done a great recovery in the last races closing the championship gap to 20 points only.

Yeah he's done a pretty good job in a car that till recently has struggled to match the others. The Ferrari is looking more competitive for the coming races but Alonso may well lose 25 points shortly which will effectively end his chances.

The championship is Red Bull's to lose and they've done a pretty good job at that so far. They are though still the car to beat and one of the Red Bull drivers should take it, my heart says Webber but my head says Vettel who does appear to have the edge on pace but not quite as expected.

Do you not think that Vettel enjoys the same backing from his team?

I don't think that Alonso has the full backing of the team as you are implying. I think Germany was more whining from the cockpit rather than backing of the team. He has form for it.

He also will I think get points removed after the council ruling to come soon. He has done better than I expected at Ferrari though. Massa being out of action for a while helped this though.

Years ago back in the UK I used to race stock cars. There we raced the fastest guys from the back at the start. It made for better watching for the spectators. I think it would also work for F1. If you get one of the top cars / drivers starting from the back of the grid it makes it a good race. Both Schumacher and Hamilton are great at fighting their way through the pack to get on the podium. Though not so much Schumacher these days in a Mercedes. Looking forward to next weeks Belgium GP at Francorchamps. A good fast circuit that should give us some close racing. Red Bull will still be the team to beat though

Yes, he is being backed by his team but not by his team mate. Webber is never going to accept a team order. Massa will do it again and again, he has always been a number 2 driver.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Depends on the circumstances.

Not entirely true. When Kimi was coming to the end of his time at Ferrari his heart really wasn't in it. Massa began to outperform him and the team started to get behind him more. He established, if not first driver status, equal driver status, which did wonders for his fragile confidence. Sadly (and somewhat cruely) though for Massa the arrival of Alonso inevitably meant an immediate return to the days of playing second fiddle.

I've voted for Alonso and i really hope i'm wrong. My reasoning is that Ferrari will get a little slap on the wrists, nothing more and will continue to flout the rules.

If by chance the FIA shows some balls and clobbers both team and driver, i have a feeling it could be Webber, Vettel, or Hamiton. :D

Wishful thinking would let me say Alonso because I have always been a Ferrari fan.

But more realistically I believe it will be between Vettel and Webber. Vettel is still a bit young and compared to his team mate Webber, lacking experience, which is why I would put my money on Webber.

Hmm, in Formula 1, overtaking is so difficult with the aerodynamic of modern Formula 1 cars. I am afraid even the best drivers in (theoretically) the fastest car will not be able to overtake the whole field, like in other car races. But the idea is certainly a good one, but need some changes in the rules. FIA had set up a study group on how to facilitate overtaking, but when it ruled double diffusers to be legal, hope were destroyed that something will change.

I would suggest to outlaw the front wing altogether, make ground effect cars legal, i.e. get rid of the flat underground, so that cars are less effected by turbulent air form the car in front.

Out of topic, but I would also love to see 12 cylinder engines return. Nothing like the sound of a 19,000 rpm 12 cylinder!!!

Hmmm ~~ that narrows it down a bit! Alonso, Webber, Vettel or Hamilton!

Post Spa I hope it's Webber but Hamilton is looking strong. Vettel seems to be suffering uncontrollable testosterone overload but I think will be very strong next year with time to reflect on this season.

Posted

I voted Hamilton, he is driving better than ever.

Really hard to tell if he's way out ahead of the field with nobody challenging him.

I'd like to see some closer challenges.

Posted

Well post Spa, I think it will be Hamilton. He has Button who is far more likely to be a team player, than Vettel helping Webber.

I think had we been voting post Spa, many of might have voted somewhat differently, although as quickly as the title race seemed to swing in Belgium, it can easily swing again in Italy. I think this one will go down to the wire.

I do agree although i thought Slater's suggestion that perhaps Button was deliberately baulking the rest of the field so as to allow Lewis to get away was a silly one. If the time comes, Button will help Lewis i'm sure, but the time has certainly not come yet. Button still has a shout and judging by the way he drove in Spa up until being taken out, a reasonably good one.

Carmine, Alonso had only two votes......you and I.

For the time being it seems that we chose well!

Well, had Vettel's engine not blown i would be feeling very confident about my choice.

Still, fat lady hasn't sung just yet.

Last week I would have voted for Webber, being in the lead and I'm a bit biased. But alas, he showed his true colors in the rain belly acheing to the officials prior to the race start and during the laps behind the pace car about conditions where Hamilton was trying to get the race started. Any wonder Webber talked him self into an early prang. :annoyed:

Alonso!

You are right. It was all so negative from Webber. Leading the Championship as he was, in a strong position in the race (would have been winning position) and in the best car in the field, he should have had all the confidence in the world and been wanting to get on with sewing things up.

He left his balls behind.

Yep against my better preference it seems that Alonso is primed and I have to give credit where credit is due he has gotten out of the car whatever it would give him on the given weekends to get the result putting him where he is..

It seems that gifted race by Fillipe is now a pivotal point in the season for him but from there he has taken the Bull by the horns so to speak  ..... Fair play to him..
