Speaking for myself who has been married to the same Thai girl for 25 years now, I can say there's quite a bit of truth to the author's postion but I take exception to a good deal of it as well. Thai and Chinese culture seem to be the most contrary cultures to NW European traditions that I have found in the world how about some middle eastern cultures Einstien? The guy might have some valid points in part of his blob, but you can take the piss out of any culture if you really want to.....yes, even different Western cultures.

Some girls over time become more Anglicised,prob the more intelligent and educated ones but most stay Thai. The author does come across as bitter/jaded but also I think his upbringing in America within a household where the wife & husband shared everything with no secrets - he wanted the same with a Thai partner. That is not to be. Shame really as he hit Thailand at a fairly young age and should have appreciated the differences especially the positives over the Calvanistic/Puritanical upbringing he experienced.
July 19, 200520 yr After thinking some more, it really is a negaitve view of the world. Experiences he recounts would also happen anywhere in the world and are not symptomatic of Thailand, he just puts a spin on them to make it that way. He also recounts all the experience he has, but really I can be cynical and summise he finished University and hasn't held a steady job in 10 years. Now because he doesn't have a decent job / wage, sitting in his room at night watching Thai TV with the whurring of the fan, as aircon is too expensive, obly makes the poor guy worse. There is obviously no fun in his life. Does it drag up the mental image of one of the falang guys walking around Sukhumvit, looking like they have the troubles of the world on their shoulders and in a lather of sweat.

When I first came to Thailand and started to study Thai, I never thought or intended to find a Thai girl for marriage or a long relationship, but I did anyway, and so far I have to say it may have been the best thing that happened to me. Any discussion of these subjects from a logical Western viewpoint is highly likely to get the Thai goat in a major way. Most of us in the West would regard the Thai propensity of bending where the wind blows as flim-flam, lack of backbone. The Thai, on the other hand, regard it as something to be proud of. Nobody ever colonised or conquored them vbecause they invited them in! As regards Thai honesty. It apopears to be a fairly liquid ideal to many. They all regard themselves as scrupulously honest, until they get caught. Even then, they regard the problem as being their loss of face at being found out, not their own misdeeds. This also tends to explain their predisposition for shooting the messenger, rather than sorting out the problem. Note our beloved leader's constantly ongoing war with the press. Face is everything here. Closely followed by Krieng Jai. Until we understand these aspects of the Thai character, we will never be able to fit in and make our way in this society. Krieng Jai is a major source of the Thai proclivity for severe over-reaction to stress; viz, the frequent explosions and killings in hot temper. They have to constantly swallow their pride where a Westerner would relieve the stress by being much more likely to speak up and refuse to take the excreta others heap on them.
July 20, 200520 yr this article was always going to trigger the knee jerk reactions from people - he's talking <deleted> ..etc etc - but he does point out his background and says that these are the opinions he has formed from his perspective. while you(I) might not agree with all he has to say , I think he is to be complimented for taking the time to write down his observations and oponions in a clearheaded and thought provoking way. July 20, 200520 yr Something about that whole "tome" in the link troubled me, so I spend Lunch-time re-reading it. It appears he is a Thai, his father is an American Vietnam War person, and his other comes from Issan. The number of times he refers to his "Thai Mother". So he is saying, although he is a Thai, or at a minimum has a Thai mother, the Thai girls just aren't good enough for him. Normally in a home you get a dominant language. If you both start from a point of zero or near zero, one language will eventually become the dominant one. It is quite common for English to be the dominant language. So his complaints in my mind about the Language thing aren't entirely valid. This makes me laugh, after reading it the second time.... Now in 2005, when Thai women hear me speak Thai, I certainly don't get the same response as a decade ago. Isn't that because he admits he doesn't speah Thai very well now. The article contradicts itself, and I got the feeling he just has a grudge, and doesn't really fit into society all that well. Well the 15 minutes of fame are over.
