Having walked around the municipal stadium area in Chiang Mai today, which is the focal point of the red gathering here, I was surprised to see the relative lack of merchandise with Taksin's face on it. I could only find a couple of stalls among about a hundred which had this.

Their hands are already full of his crap to buy more:

Thanks for saving me the trouble of having to prove my point to those 'crazy red-bashers'. Two pictures among a crowd that goes back as far as the eye can see. Maybe I should revise my initial estimate of Taksin's relevance down even further.

Perhaps you've never attended a big gathering of people if you think there would be hundreds of over-sized, view-blocking pictures being waved about in the front rows of an event.

p.s. since apparently you can't tell, there's at least three different people carrying these Thaksin-worshipping iconic portraits.

p.s.s. "as far as the eye can see" = a few thousand

One of the great features of banners and signs in this hi-tech age is that they can easily be raised and lowered by simply using one's arms. You will observe in your own pictures that many people are holding their hands up, but have only a few of these easily-lowered signs or pictures. I don't see Taksin on their t-shirts and there are no Mr T face masks in view. Both of these things were prevalent at demos earlier in the year.

All you've got is two pictures of Taksin in the same shot, showing a large group of people. I know it's late and maybe you're tired yet still feel that familiar nagging urge to do a bit of late-night 'red-bashing', but please try harder than this to achieve your ends. This is practically an own-goal.

The red shirts started their activities yesterday morning with 50 vehicles joining a caravan from Big C Lat Phrao to Chiang Mai. Somyos Prueksakasemsuk and Sunai Jullapongsatorn were the leaders.

More from Somyos:

The Reds to rally at least 4 times in October, said Red Shirt group´s core member

BANGKOK, 30 September 2010 (NNT) – Red Shirt group revealed on Thursday their plan to stage a rally at least 4 times in October, hoping to send out their messages clearer and louder this time around.

Mr. Somyos Prueksakasemsuk, one of the United front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) core members, has revealed today that the group has already planned to gather and rally on 4 occasions during the month of October.

He stated that the group would reunite on 10, 14, 16 and 17 October under the theme of The Red Crown Reunite to Fight Back.

The events included in the 4 days are the rally from Ayutthaya to Bangkok and the sign representing their voices and thoughts written on a 1 kilometer long banner, which is expected to be the reunion’s highlight.

Mr. Somyos also added that the group remained firm about their request to have the government meet their 4 demands including the release of all UDD’s accused, Court of Justice restructure, economic reformation, and sufficient agriculturists’ income guarantee.

Furthermore, the group has also demanded the government to be neutral when broadcasting news and presenting the truth to the public.

About two weeks ago k. Jatuporn c.s. laid red roses at the gates of prisons were UDD leaders and other red-shirts are held. He promised the UDD would do this every week.

Anyone out here who knows if this has been done ? Should be two times already by now.

He's made so many promises and pronouncements and threats and claims over the past months, he can hardly be expected to keep track of them all.

Coincidentally, the person making these demands, Somyos Prueksakasemsuk, is the Editor of such "truthful" publications as the Voice of Taksin and Red News

Well, to his defense he didn't say he would do, just that the UDD would continue with this. Maybe the budget for red roses run out. Time for a new campaign seeking donations, this time with receipts signed by k. Jatuporn himself. That is if he's not too busy with the few tapes we're still waiting for ;)

more "Red Alert" today

Thai police capture 11 "red-shirt" militants in northern Chiang Mai

BANGKOK -- Combined forces of police and security authorities in northern province of Chiang Mai arrested 11 "red-shirt" militants in a resort Saturday evening, a local website Kom Chad Luek reported Sunday. A local security source unveiled with Kom Chad Luek on Sunday that the Police Chief of Mae-On district in Chiang Mai Saturday arrested Kittichai Chansawatdee alleged as a member of "red-shirt" militants who said he had escaped from a resort where the rest of militants stayed and used as an operational base. As Kittichai confessed, the police were then able to capture the rest of the members, except Saharat who was claimed to be the leader of the group and was under arrest warrant issued by the Center for the Resolution of Emergency Situation.

According to Kittichai who reportedly said his personal code is j0011, there were 30 members of "red-shirt" militants trained in the border area of neighboring Cambodia and then around 12 of them came one by one to Chiang Mai to wait for an appropriate time for conducting operations. After being investigated, all 11 arrested militants are currently detained in a safe house in Chiangmai for further interrogation. They are native differently to northeastern, central, and northern regions of Thailand.

No jail time and a tiny fine in the case of a Red beating up an old, small PTP man

Red-shirt Actor Given Suspended Jail Term for Assault

The Criminal Court handed down a suspended one month jail sentence and a 2,000 baht fine to a pro-red shirt actor for assaulting a Pheu Thai Election Director for Surat Thani province.

The court first handed down a two month jail term and a 4,000 baht fine to red shirt actor Methee Amornwuthikul for assault but slashed it by half, reasoning that his confession helped the investigators.

Moreover, since this is his first offense, the jail term has been suspended by one year.

The case was filed with the court last September after Methee punched Adiraj Thampitak, Director of Pheu Thai's election center in Surat Thani who showed up at the party headquarters to call on the party to compensate him for the money he spent on its campaign.

At the time, Methee said he was furious with Adiraj for removing a basket of flowers from an altar before the picture of Her Majesty the Queen, placed outside the party.

After today's verdict reading, Methee said he would not return to the entertainment business and he has a plan to contest the next election in Bangkok's Pomprap Satrupai district.

He did not mention which party he will represent.

Here's a photo of the big, brave Red man punching up his small, elderly victim:

And here's a video of the repeated thrashing the hapless receiver got at the hands of the Advocate for Red Free Speech and Peace Movement for the egregious act of asking to get reimbursed for the costs he spent for campaign materials

for the Pheu Thai Party. How dare he be so brazen as to ask for what's fair:

Looks like another thug running for political office then.

He saved Pheu Thai Party a few baht by welching on their campaign advertising bill, so he'll probably run under the "peaceful" PTP banner.

I wonder who will be brave enough to take his business for printing up his MP campaigning materials? :unsure:

Khon Kaen Red-shirt Group Back in Action

The red shirt group in (Khon Kaen) province has become active again after the Emergency Decree was lifted.

The group's first demand to the government is to release the detained red shirt leaders.

The red-shirt group in Khon Kaen has organized its first activity after the Emergency Decree in the three last northeastern provinces was lifted by the government. Red shirt supporters, led by local leaders, gathered in Muang district to voice their demands to the government.

Leader of the group, a local radio talk show host, said that the demonstrators' first demand was for the government to release the detained red shirt leaders.

They also demanded justice for their comrades who were killed and injured in clashes with security forces during the May unrest.

The group is also planning to coordinate with allies from surrounding provinces.

Also the Red Station, an anti-government radio station broadcasting in Khon Kaen and nearby provinces which was temporary suspended during the unrest, is now back online. The station has also been broadcasting messages, demanding justice for the protesters killed during the violence.

The group has been campaigning for red shirt supporters to vote for the opposition Pheu Thai Party in the next general election in order to bring former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra back to Thailand.

Meanwhile, Khon Kaen Governor Sombat Triwatsuwan declined to comment on the group's gathering, saying that he will need more information since he was only appointed to office three days ago.

One and the same, but he was busted before May Mayhem 2010. The Red is a former actor and naked model and a future MP for PTP?

There are five factors that justify Methee, a former nud_e model, as a leader of the red-shirt movement and commander of its militants:

He delivered several speeches on stage;

He was seen accompanying Khattiya;

He had access to war weapons seized from soldiers;

He was arrested while holding an assault rifle;

He has been able to provide accurate details about inside stories of the red shirts and security operatives.
