Anti-government Red Shirts end demonstration at Ratchaprasong

BANGKOK: -- Thailand's anti-government Red Sunday group ended their demonstration at Ratchaprasong Sunday evening, releasing over one thousand red balloons and lighting red candles to mark the anniversary of the September 2006 coup four years ago this date.

While some demonstrators have not yet vacated the area, Thailand's largest Red Shirt gathering since May 19 was wound down to a peaceful close.

Sombat Boonngamanong, a leading activist of the Red Sunday group, said that the day’s activities succeeded. A large number of Red Shirts came earlier than agreed, so the schedule was changed to complete all activities at 5.30pm before dispersing.

Mr Sombat led the demonstrators in releasing more than one thousand balloons. The protesters shouted and sang but no stage was erected for speakers to address the crowd.

They lit red candles before ending their activities. While most demonstrators dispersed, some still remained at the site.

Pol Maj-Gen Vichai Sangprapai, commander of Metropolitan Police Division 4 and Pol Maj-Gen Anucha Lekbumrung, commander of Metropolitan Police Division 6 with seven companies of officers have been standing by to control the situation at Ratchaprasong.

Gen Vichai said that overall the activities were orderly. The blocking of parts of traffic lanes was normal and unavoidable due to the large number of demonstrators.

After the leaders announced the end of the demonstration, the police would stand by until the area returns to normal. No deadline has been set for them to vacate the site but the police expected most would leave before 8pm.

Intelligence reported no signs of any attack and there had been no violence so far, he said.

Shopping malls in Ratchaprasong--including Siam Paragon, Siam Center, and the Siam Discovery department stores--closed earlier at 6pm Sunday.

Meanwhile, in the northern province of Chiang Mai, the other main venue of Red Shirt activities to mark the 2006 coup and the stronghold of the Red Shirt or the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), Red Shirt leaders took turns to speak on the stage at the Chiang Mai municipality stadium Sunday evening but cancelled the expected call-in by several leaders who are still on-the-run.

Red Shirt supporters also gathered to mark the event in the northeastern province of Nongkhai and the southern provinces of Nakhon Si Thammarat and Songkhla.

A state of emergency remains in the capital of Bangkok and six other provinces, but it was lifted in Chiang Mai last month. (MCOT online news)

Pheu Thai exposes new power’s coup bid

BANGKOK, 19 September 2010 (NNT) – The opposition Pheu Thai Party has disclosed that a group of military leaders and politicians are trying to intervene in the Thai politics by inciting terror in order to orchestrate another coup d’état.

Pheu Thai Party Spokesperson Prompong Nopparit revealed that a group of military leaders and politicians known as “the new power”, is engineering a coup attempt. He said the group is trying to incite unrest incidents and chaos in a bid to seize the power and rule the country.

Mr Prompong then called for their patriotism and asked them to stop instigating violence to harm the country for its own political gains.

The spokesperson believed that if there was another coup, people would come out in opposition. He said Pheu Thai Party was of the opinion that anyone longing for power must obtain it through the democratic rules only.

Upon the fourth anniversary of the 19 Sep coup d’état and four months after the military cordoning operation, Mr Prompong demanded that Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva should investigate all related incidents and prevent repetition of such tragedies in Thailand.

Wasn't it only a few months ago that they boasted of a million man march ( ), yet in their own heartland of Chiang Mai, they only could muster a few thousand today.

That is up from the 200 at last month's huge rally

No SOE in Chiang Mai and a 500 turnout in Thaksin's home base. Seems they're getting further and further away from their purported turnouts of 1,000,000.

The "Red in the Land" is certainly getting to be a paler shade:

Sorry, I stand corrected. It was a massive rally of 200, not 500.

With 'disclosed' and 'revealed' it is probably meant that K. Prompong said so and we can believe it on his cute blue eyes ?

K. Jatuporn is busy in ChiangMai, the tape will come later ;)

I really don’t think people really would care if there another coup. The Red shirt did so much damage to economy, employment, and everyone wend about doing their business and did not anything. This is the Thai mentality, WHO CARES

Come on now!

We shouldn't be too harsh on them, you know.

How would those agriculturalists come to the rally on their own?

Most North and Northeastern representatives, including their senators have not been fully reimbursed to date.

These state representatives and senators are way smarter than yellow foxes running around their hills and mountains.

Do you really expect any one of them dishing out their own cash to finance the rally?

Their own core leader won't want to show up, if all his expenses are not guaranteed! Sad and shame.

This poor sucker lied so many times on public television

and reversed himself every other day that

many begin to wonder if he won't score well

in any psychotic profile testing at Chula. :intheclub:

A good thing that his political party does not have a confirmed leader yet.

Otherwise, he would be canned long time ago.

I just cannot believe the nonsense that some of these people come out with:

"inciting terror to orchestrate a coup d'etat". If this person has proof of this, then let him come forward with the names of those involved. And, I would also suggest that he marks his own words, that all parties should "obtain power through democratic rules".

Prime Minister Abhisit is still in place, despite vows and threats to bring his tenure to an end ... one way or another! If people would begin to recognize that Thailand has a future under his leadership, then perhaps he could on with his proposed plans for development without having to look over his shoulder all the time for the activities of the Red Shirt Terorists and the exiled villain Khun T.

Is Jatuporn training some personal clowns (sorry meant clones)?

More double standards on their own part, the irony of what they say considering their leaders (inclusing the conviced one on the run) past actions, past claims and speeches is totally laughable.

I drove by Ratchaprasong this morning as always and I can't help commenting that while the reds have left, they again have also left for others to clean up after them. Same as last time

I'd like to see the reds clean up after themselves for once, but perhaps they weren't taught that

Is this like writing their PTP mini-autobiography?

Let their dogs loose, but blame a third hand... same same for PTP.

We are the clean hands people it's others doing the dirty work.

The Red Shirt fans still call this a huge success, even with the small numbers etc.

For instance, one rabid fan is a brit called Tony Hedges, http://twitter.com/TonyHedges and http://tonyhedges.wordpress.com/

westminsterbridge01.jpg

A sample of his latest messages, all the way from the UK:

TO @tri26 @terryfrd in that photo I would estimate between 12,000 to 20,000 easy. I don't understand why people are so coy about numbers?

TO @tri26 that photo is very impressive. has to be at least 15,000 in the foreground and it stretches out of sight. 10k my arse!

TO @Nok_KN wow, that picture shows there were many more people there than the govt wishes there were. At least 20,000 in the picture alone.

TO @ricefieldradio so who came out with the figure of 7,000? I mean, please don't insult our intelligence, we can see more than 7k there!

TO @C_Ivo i back them because they reporesent the freedom to chose whoever you like in free and fair elections. What do you have to fear?

TO @C_Ivo and don't forget to thank the RedShirts when you get to vote next time, vote for whoever you want.

Some are deluded more than others.

And he and some other fans are on the case of spreading misinformation like this every day.

Counting with only ten fingers ain't easy. I always wondered how attendance numbers were calculated with gatherings, or should I say 'guestimated'.

With the social sites it's too easy to just write down any bloody nonsense you want. Even the truth is possible ;) Just replied on some here who wrote 'election due November I thought'. Disinformation, suggestions, insinuations, half-truths. To find the truth, or to know what to believe becomes very difficult. Easy prey for government conspiracy theorists.
