My impression is that most of the expats I've met in Thailand and the majority of TV members are from the political right. I wonder if that impression is accurate and, if so, why?

A few decades ago I was far left, however, I have drifted towards the center.

But, yes your statement is true in my view, 'bar-talk' in Thailand and here on TV, the majority certainly lean to the right.

Will someone please tell me what it means to "be on the right" politically?

As we say in our bar:

No Politics,

No Religion,

No Credit.

I don't care about politics, and I don't vote in any elections.

Same here.

Taoism: shit happens

Buddhism: if shit happens, it isn't really shit

Islam: if shit happens, it is the will of Allah

Catholicism: if shit happens, you deserve it

Judaism: why does this shit always happen to us?

Atheism: I don't believe this shit

I don't care about politics, and I don't vote in any elections.

And me :o

Sorry, no vote.

While I watch politics in the US, Europe, Asia it would be difficult to determine in which country left or right means what.

E.g. left can mean democrats in one country and socialists in another.

A little to the right of Attila and Ghengis... :o

In our old bar in Phnom Penh (Irish Rover-RIP) the above subjects were almost compusory.....apart from the credit issue .....cmon THATS serious...init.. which was a def.....No No.

Another essential subject which needless to say took its share of opinions was of course is the one that drives us all ..on and on........SEX :D

Remember one night we had 2 ambassadors a Khmer Government Minister(still in H.Sens cabinet ...just :o )a Chinese and Russian /Americian (great guys)who were military observers,"Walter"-ex CIA chap... and uz......whit a night...solved the worlds problems :D

Human rights are hard to come by..... but very easy to lose :D

Looks like I am the red under the duvet cover :D

Get off my bar-stool! :o

Que? :D

I don't believe it!

And here I was under the impression this forum was populated by only Bleeding-Heart Liberals!

Glad your a 'Right' thinker, RDN! :D

Stand? I'm left just sighing right and left about left or right AND striped morons, fear mongers and political or religious opportunists :o

Always believed we were reading from a different dictionary, or even speaking a different language. This new definition of "little" is blowing my mind.

As for me. Nor Left, Right nor Center. Simply believe in Realpolitic. The correct choice for any given situation without the handicap of political dogma. . . . . .

If not sat down, I stand at the bar!
...and at the urinal.

Who was it that said...

If you are not a socialist (far left wing) when young, you have no heart,

If you are not a capitalist (right wing) when old, you have no brain [Ed: Wolf5370 - (or pehaps money)]

...and so it was that Plato predicted the fate of the United States at around the turn of the second millenium after somebody decided to nail a geezer up onto a wooden cross just because he suggested people ought to be a bit more civil to each other. :o

So, I was correct. Of those willing to state, more on the right than on the left.

However, no one has yet ventured an opinion as to why.

My own guess is that the expat community consists of a higher proportion of ex-military than would be found at "home" and that ex-military tend to be more right wing than the general population.

I just looked and there are more people declaring themselves left than declaring them selves right....are we looking at different poles?

I guess I added up the "leanings" to get my total of more right than left....
