World Cup oracle Paul the Octopus dies

2010-10-26 19:40:20 GMT+7 (ICT)

BERLIN, GERMANY (BNO NEWS) -- Paul the Octopus, who gained international fame after correctly predicting the results of the 2010 World Cup, died on early Tuesday, Aquarium Oberhausen said. He was 2.5 years old.

"Management and staff at the Oberhausen Sea Life Centre were devastated to discover that oracle octopus Paul, who achieved global renown during the recent World Cup, had passed away overnight," Aquarium Oberhausen, where the famous sea animal was living, announced.

During this summer's edition of the World Cup, international reporters gathered to witness Paul's predictions, which were set up by its owners by placing two boxes with the national flags representing a coming match.

Each of the boxes contained a mussel. Which ever box Paul decided to open first was taken as his prediction. Paul correctly predicted all eight of the matches he was involved in, including all the matches with the German national team, and Spain’s final victory over the Netherlands.

"His success made him almost a bigger story than the World Cup itself," said Stefan Porwoll, manager of the aquarium. "We had all naturally grown very fond of him and he will be sorely missed."

There are unsubstantiated reports that the remains of a poisoned Edam was found in his tank...ph34r.gif

Nice one. But oh! such anger from the rest of you. Actually I heard from my friends in the scientific community that Paul was actually Pauline! Further, that there are now offspring being reared in another location in readiness for the next World Cup. Its not being talked about, because Pauline's original minders were stunned by all the attention, and had no idea of the revenue raising potential. But they do now. This is from 2 reliable sources in Germany.

I'd like to point out that this thread is to pay respects to Paul the octopus. It is not a thread for making allegations regarding Paul's involvement in politics or whether Trevor the squid will succeed Paul as the next aquatic international football pundit. Posters choosing to ignore this will have their posting rights suspended.
