Thailand "Deadliest" Destination For Aussies

A more interesting analysis might determine if the death rates in Thailand for accidental and natural causes is materially different than in OZ. For example, are Aussie men with life insurance policies favoring their Thai wives dying at rates different than the Aussies at home, in a similar demographic strata, married to non-Thais who are named as beneficiaries?

Now, that would be a news story.

Australia's overseas-born population accounted for 30% of deaths registered in 2008 (43,100 deaths), despite making up only 26% of the resident population in 2008.

Does not obviously mean that they did not taken up Australian Citizenship

I think the UK also lists Thailand as the place where the most number of travelers die while on holiday. Here is a bit more info from another source. The numbers don't seem to add up to me????

On average, 15 Australians die overseas each week. This includes deaths from natural causes. In the past five years 3938 Australians have died overseas.

The department said the death rate was not high compared with the number of Australians who travelled. In the past five years there have been 29.1 million departures of permanent residents from Australia.

Another source? That info is in the OP word for word.

The numbers: 29 mil permanent residents departing - people going on holidays or business trips, leaving the country for a short time. It doesn't include tourists departing.

oops...missed that. I saw this article in another source, but missed it in the OP. :jap:

wow who would imagine the largest death toll is thailand, phil and vietnam, nothing to do with old gimmers and viagra at all. good riddence i say.

Well gosh, it's good to know there is at least one compassionate member here on Thai Visa.

Kenny

Yeah, we have our fair share of wacko's here. Not a very good response for sure....

I wonder how many foreigners die in

Australia every year ? I think it will be more than the amount of Australians who die here in Thailand ?

You can't compare the quantity of one nationality to the quantity of all nationalities.

How about a comparison with the number of Thais in Australia?

Unless the deaths are related to number of visits and length of stay then it seems to be rather pointless publishing them anyway.

Reading anything out of context can only lead to misinterpretation.

IMHO

Fair point. My son was born in Thailand and holds Australian citizenship by decent if anything was to happen to him (God Forbid) he would be included as an Australian overseas death even tho he may not of even been to OZ.

Article does not have to correct nor factual. Let this run in Oz media and minimum 1/3 of bookings will be canceled

Put it on the website as a warning as another 1/3 will be canceled.

The only ones that will come either ones who can not read and sex tourists and there is nothing keeping them away from girls 1/3 of their age.

You could be 1/3 correct .:D

The problem is when people go overseas they do things which is out of their comfort zone with out thinking of the potential consequences, visitors to Thailand aren't the only people who do things which brings their life into danger, for example

Northern Territory police have found body of a German tourist who went missing two days ago.

The 63-year-old man went on a bush walk in Kakadu National Park on Friday morning and did not return.

His body was found away from the main path, about three kilometres from the carpark of Kakadu's popular tourist destination Nourlangie Rock.

It is believed the man was not carrying any water when he set off on the 12-kilometre walk.

Does that mean that German tourists are going to stop coming to Australia, the same thing applies to those coming to Thailand, I'm sure the over the years some ex-prisoner of war visiting the Thailand Burma railway has met an un-timely death, but doing things out of the ordinary in an extraordinary place like Thailand makes the risk worthwhile

If we think about the Aussies involved in the Red Shirt madness -- I bet they now rate up on the list of terms of where foreign terrorists, in Thailand, come from. whistling.gif

All it takes is one wacko, and the rest of us get tarred with the same brush

Hum... Have they come up with a vaccine for dengue or malaria that I haven't ever heard of?

It's coming:

Denque vaccine

Wow...fantastic! We've had quite a few cases here in Chonburi province. Even one of our local mods got it...

I had a dose myself a couple of months ago. Still not completely back to normal.

Pity the statistics don't show how many of these deaths are alcohol related...

A year ago they ran this same type of story but they did get into more detail and I believe most deaths occured due to a combination of alcohol and motorbikes. The ran the story here on Thai Visa. So, I would be you could find it if you wanted.

That's good news, other than it's still five years off. I caught chikungungya here 15 months ago and still have it. It's a lot like Ross River virus and dengue. Absolutely no fun! It's very painful at times. But I don't think I'll die from it. See links:Ross River Virus Chikungunya

I take the warning for what I think it is meant to do......when one goes on holidays, take care.

Aw, shucks. You mean I should not:

- hoon around on a motorbike, drunk and without helmet?

- take lots of counterfeit viagra in order to screw as many locals as possible?

- accept dodgy new friends as family and willingly take that suspicious package back home for "Mum"?

- experiment with new "vitamins"?

- fit all my mates (all 5) on one motorcycle just like the locals?

- clamber onboard the leaky boat after the full moon party where I saw the boat captain getting drunk too?

- drink and drive?

- get into drunken brawls with Russians?

- carry my own firearms "for protection"?

- asssume "she looks18" is acceptable legal defense?

- be rude, loud and belligerent when the locals don't understand me?

Geez, it's gonna be a boring holiday! :whistling:
