74% of Thais Expect Political Changes After Songkran: Poll
File photo courtesy of INN news A recent opinion poll reveals that a whopping 74.2% of Thai citizens anticipate political change following the Songkran Festival. Conducted by Super Poll Research Centre, the survey reflects growing scepticism about the current government's stability. The renowned celebration may just usher in more than water fights, hinting at potential political upheavals. Assistant Professor Dr. Noppadol Kannika, director of the research centre, underscored Songkran's role in amplifying public engagement with national affairs. During this culturally significant period from April 10-14, the poll tapped into the perspectives of 1,102 respondents spanning diverse professions across Thailand. Among the respondents, concerns about governmental conflict topped the list, as 36.9% indicated internal discord, particularly within coalition parties, as a likely cause for change. Instigations close to leadership stem from 30.6% of those surveyed, while 27.8% believe social media trends push the perception of dissent and unrest. Economic woes and dissatisfaction with government policies were cited by 20.5% and 14.9%, respectively. When drilling into potential political shifts, 38.4% of respondents predict a cabinet reshuffle while 37.6% foresee a schism within the coalition government. Such adjustments signal growing discomfort and intentions to tackle immediate challenges without drastic measures like dissolving parliament. Additionally, 32.1% anticipate political rallies, and 27.5% expect parliamentary dissolution, hinting at possible significant structural transformations should pressures mount beyond governmental control. Just 25.6% of respondents asserted that no changes would occur, illustrating widespread sentiment of political fragility. The findings underscore a palpable air of distrust among the populace, with many anticipating challenges both internally within the government and from external formidable forces. Tanker Overturns in Surin, Spills 18,000 Litres of Fuel Following Driver Fatigue
Picture from responders. A traffic incident occurred in Surin province today when a fuel tanker carrying 42,000 litres of diesel overturned after crashing into a power pole. The crash resulted in over 18,000 litres of diesel spilling onto the roadside, prompting an emergency clean-up operation and partial road closure. Police and emergency services were alerted to the scene near the Ban Samet bridge in Moo 7, Chuea Phloeng subdistrict, Prasat district. The vehicle, operated by Earn Rungrueang Co., Ltd., bore the registration from Pathum Thani. On arrival, authorities discovered the tanker lying upside down and a power pole snapped at its base. Initial reports confirmed that more than 18,000 litres of diesel had leaked from the tanker, creating a hazardous slick along the roadside. An estimated 24,000 litres remained inside the vehicle’s storage compartments. As a safety precaution, officials cordoned off the road into the city to facilitate recovery efforts. Fire engines and rescue workers were swiftly deployed. Water spray hose-lines were deployed at the site to prevent any sparks from igniting the spilled fuel, while a large crane was summoned to assist in lifting the overturned vehicle. Residents within the immediate vicinity were temporarily evacuated to ensure public safety. The driver, Mr. Samrong Khanpho, was unharmed in the incident. In a statement to police, he admitted to falling asleep at the wheel after departing Laem Chabang port en route to a PT fuel depot in Lamduan district. Authorities are continuing to assess the environmental impact of the spill and are coordinating with environmental agencies. -- 2025-04-16 -

Devastation in Sumy: Dozens Killed as Russian Missiles Strike City Center
But its moot. The major weapons Ukraine did "possess" (they never actually had operational control), the SS-24s, were designed to hit the United States, not Moscow. If Ukraine had refused to give them up, they would have undoubtedly come into conflict with the United States, and become internationally isolated. Maintenance of the launchers and warheads themselves would have required a horrendoust expense; 10% of the US defence budget, $50 bn, is just on maintaining the nuclear weapon forces. The servicing facilties were located in Russia. The inherited weapons were old, and "lifed", with the first ones expiring in 1993, and the last in 2002. A well balanced piece by Volodymyr Horbulin, the Head of the Council for Foreign and Security Policy, a Ukrainian NGO, and a literal rocket scientist, explaining why keeping the nuclear weapons was never a realistic option: https://nsarchive.gwu.edu/sites/default/files/documents/qviyu2-qb44k/92.pdf -
