American Football

I was in Tampa when Doug Williams threw that TD to Kevin House against the Rams in the NFL Championship, which the officials mis-called as not a TD, meaning the Steelers won their Super Bowl ring by whipping the Rams instead of whipping the Bucs. Oh yeah, the Steelers would have obliterated Tampa, but that's not the point. Where was the US government then?

In other words, Hyde Parke, Specter's being silly.

I'm ready for some football.

I'll be at Bally's in Vegas for the first weekend of NFL, cleaning up in the sportsbook. Happy to meet any of you guys there.

Patriots at home against the Chiefs, I have to think the spread will be 13.5, you guys like the Pastries to cover that?

The Jets at Miami. Can Miami be a better team or will they get rolled?

Monday night:

Minnesota at Green Bay, I thought Minnesota made some great leaps last year, but so did GB. Both have questionable quarterback situations and good defense, under?

Denver at my Oakland RAIDERS. (just win baby !). This will be a tight spread, but i think my Raiders are going to make a huge turnaround this year, plus I truly hate Denver. RAIDERS WIN THE SUPERBOWL ! RAIDERS WIN THE SUPERBOWL !

RAIDERS ARE FINALLY COMPETITIVE! RAIDERS ARE FINALLY COMPETITIVE! That is all you can expect this year, but at least it will be more interesting than in previous years. I do like J. Russell. I caught the bowl game against ND while in the US and could see why experts felt he is a can't miss. However, he needs a couple of years. Don't expect too much.

I expect the Raiders to only be a couple of games behind San Diego in the division and to get a wild card into the playoffs.

McFadden will have the "Petersen (Minnesota)" effect, and all of the defensive signings will shore up what was a porous D.

9-7 for my Raiders, starting with a Monday Night shellacking of the crappy Broncos.

just wanted to let everyone know, i know of two ways to watch NFL just like you were back in the US (although different hours obviously). if you have a laptop or computer you can order the NFL Game Pass through yahoo sports (not cheap, but worth it in my opinion) and watch it on your computer - if your computer has an s-video and you also have a tv with an s-video, you can connect your computer and tv and watch NFL on the tv (big screen if you have one or shell out for it).

also, you can set up a sling box somewhere in the US and watch US tv through your laptop (the s-video will apply as well) - i do not know anything about setting up a slingbox, but i know it works if you have somewhere to set it up in the US (parents' house, friends house, ect)

go birds! the return of DMAC #5 and the eagles back to nfc east supremacy!! anyone in cha-am or hua hin?

Has anyone actually tried the Yahoo service? I think the internet speed in Thailand is too slow for streaming video.

I too would love to catch some college ball if anybody has any ideas.

BTW. Will we be getting the games on UBC/True this year? Anybody?

tested my home connection - my speed came out at insufficient at 280 (says you need 300), but when i tested the video quality everything was fine. not sure if it will be when it streams though . . .

i have a tt@t connection; the one that is about 1,000 baht a month and comes to around 1,200 with tax. think it will work come gametime? might have to upgrade - but the next upgrade would be 2,000 baht a month . . ouch!

ayone else test it out?

Does anyone have a satellite setup to get NCAA football? The pros are great but I prefer the college game - one of the few things I really miss here...

I like both and actually last season we had more NCAA football than I can ever remember in Thailand. Not all conferences, of course, but still some of the games were outstanding.

August 3, 8pm EST, the Hall of Fame Game. That's when my football withdrawal symptoms can, hopefully, start to ease. I don't expect an accurate True/UBC listing, though. I'll just flip channels and hope like heck.

I mean, this is the time of year when I hope Brett Favre doesn't join my hometown Carolina Panthers, and we keep reading about the legal troubles of TAFKAP (The Artist Formerly Known As Pacman).

Pacman is a good guy now since he joined the good guys.

Who is playing in the Hall of Fame game?

Hey,

Since we've got two weeks before the Hall of Fame game, why not learn about the A-11 offense? The center's flanked by two tight ends, with three receivers to the left and three receivers to the right. And two quarterbacks in the backfield. Freaky...

a11offense - dot - com is the site. I haven't even read it yet. I will now.

The Packers are an evil organization for holding Favre hostage like this. How dare they keep Favre from joining the Minnesota Vikings...

Screw Favre, the guy cries like a baby on the retirement podium, and then later decides he wants to play. I hope he ends up in Miami.

Also, I then hope Rodgers leads them to the Super Bowl.

As a Viking fan, I'm saying the same thing and I'm loving the dilemma the organization is dealing with. But as a more forgiving person, I'm hoping they release the handcuffs on him and lets him come to America for the betterment of my team.

Aaron Rodgers isn't going to the lead that team to the Super Bowl. Not in this universe.

According to the latest information that I have seen, Brett Favre is under contract to the Packers. They proposed to turn over the starting job to Aaron Rodgers, to determine whether he could handle it; with Favre on hand to step in, if Rodgers failed. That, according to the contract, is their right. The contract does not guarantee Favre a starting job.

The Packers have been trying to act in the best interests of the TEAM. That is their responsibility. TheTEAM must always be placed ahead of the individual player. At least that's the way the Patriots have explained it! :o

I'm not disputing that, Rodgers has the starting job and Favre just isn't happy with that. He'd rather be in Minnesota. Trade 'em.

The problem with that is that it would leave the Packers without a decent backup, in the event that Rodgers proves to be a dud, as many Packer fans (and, apparently the management) fear will happen. As I said, the best scenario for the team, at this point, is to have Rodgers starting, with Favre backing him up. But Favre's selfish attitude may make that impossible.

I know that Brett Favre has given a great deal to the Packers. But that goes both ways. He's made millions of dollars from the Packers; and received the adoration of Packers fans for many years. IMO, he has an obligation to complete the contract he signed, as long as the Packers feel that they need him to do so.

You have to understand that I am a Vikings fan so all my opinions are biased haha, of course I'm not going to be suggesting things in the Packers' best interest.

The only way the Raiders will get a win in the "Super Bowl" is if they rename their stadium to "The Super Bowl". They're probably going to win a game or two there! :o

I'm just glad all the talk of Favre going to Carolina has quieted down. There are a number of teams out there that Favre can improve. My kitties aren't one of them.

So you are banking on the Delhomme rusty elbow? That's a bit precarious, no?

Yeah, I'll bank on that, or Matt Moore. Favre would just be a Band Aid that'd screw up the chemistry. I think that's the problem with many teams, really. Favre has more talent than [starter] but...

(Plus in Carolina's case, it'd be hard to see Favre obeying that lovely handoff-handoff-handoff-punt offense for 60 minutes every week. He'd cry like it was a retirement announcement.)

Well, Calico, I'll be rooting for your Panthers to have a good season. Since I shared the streets of Houston with Panthers fans before and after my Patriots beat them in Super Bowl 37, I have always hoped that the team makes their fans happy. Very classy folks, those Panthers fans.

Your organization should be more concerned with who they're going to pick 1st overall next season.

Do any of you guys have any interest in Fantasy Football?

There is a team available in a league that I have belonged to for a couple of years. If you're interested, you can get information about the league here:

http://www35.myfantasyleague.com/2008/home/16231

Just send an email to: [email protected], and say that you want to purchase the avaialable team in the Gale Sayers Rollover League (16231).

It would be great to have a fellow expat in the league!

Let me know if any of you do decide to do this.
