Speaking of Google Earth, this Sunday all the houses in my Bangkok moobaan got a notice in the mailbox that our house numbers were to be changed since the area had grown so much and the numbering was all messed up. Just come to the khet/district office with your house tabien baan (blue/yellow book) to get it updated with the new house number. Went to the khet office on Monday to get the new house number issued and the first thing the official did was pull up Google Earth and ask us to identify our home. He marked it on the Google Earth satellite image, had the image integrated/linked with a database, issued the new house number, updated the wife's blue book and my yellow book, and out the door we went. Did my 90 day address reporting the following day (it just happened to be due) at Chaeng Wattana, provided them my new house number/address on the address change/update form, the official processed/stamped that form.....he then took my 90 day address reporting form and processed it. Both office visits went smooth.

They have been doing this for at least the last year. No more land plot/mooban numbers but everything to be Soi based with consecutive numbers - of course it will take a long time for most people to replace there current xx/xx numbers. Interesting that that are taking advantage of Google to map with.

On target regarding the Soi-based as they stressed our new three digit house number which replaced the our xx/xxx number that we were no long to include the Moo XYZ number....the Moo part was history...Just the new house number and soi name.

Regarding the Google satellite image it was the exact same one anyone can pull up free on Google Earth. Then the official put a small round mark on top of our house in the image, he then double clicked the mark, a database window popped up with the old and new house address info with other info. I was pleasantly surprised...seem my khet/district office has took a nice step forward in their IT capabilities. Of course it wouldn't surprise me if they only backup their files every year.

When using the Check for Updates Online under the Help menu selection, it will only tell you if there is an update for your current version and update as necessary. Like in my case I'm running Version 5 and it just said there were no updates for my Version which is currently at Ver 5.2.2.1588 (basically I'm up to date).

I don't think you can upgrade from V5 to V6 by only using the Check for Updates Online menu selection function. To install V6 beta you will need to specifically download/install it. Hopefully/I expect it keeps/imports all your current places/marks....I know in the past on other major upgrades that is how it worked. Guess I'll find out soon as I plan to download/upgrade to GE6 over the next few days.

Well, I decided just to go ahead and download/install V6 beta right after posting my above email. Download was only a setup file about 550Kb in size, clicked that file and it started the upgrade, about a minute later it was done. Basically, it just upgraded my Ver 5 because I still have only one version of Google Earth on my computer. All my places/marks are still there and I can't tell any difference between V5 and V6 beta "on the surface" after looking at it for a minute or so. I'll need to read up on what new features it's suppose to have. But anyway, upgrading from V5 to V6 beta was fast and painless (so far) for me.

Last time I installed Google Earth it seemed to decide it wanted to have several different processes running at all times and connecting to the internet even when Google Earth wasn't running.

Rather put me off it.

Hope the latest version has dumped this behaviour.

I downloaded GE 6 beta for the Mac and am not too happy with the results. Note that icons and labels no longer scale properly and end up horribly cluttered and obscuring the earth. Both screen shots were taken of the same general area of Bangkok with the exact same settings.

Yes, it is only beta so far and I notice the PC ver crashes occasionally. I notice on PC ver labels/icons bigger than before also so changed to small under options. Clicking on map items (such as photos) also giving variable results. Maybe some users might prefer to wait for final release.
