If you have a multi entry non immigrant O-A visa from a Consulate you can make a trip before it expires (the visa itself) and get a new one year permitted to stay.

If you have a multi entry non immigrant o visa you can exit/return before it expires for a new 3 month stay.

If you have a one year extension of stay from immigration with a multi re-entry permit you visit immigration with the same paperwork for a new extension of stay. Financials as in post 2

Thailand is a bit weird, as you don't renew or extend visas. Visas expire, but you can apply for an extension of stay. Technically it is the same, but the visa is issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the extension of stay by Immigration. I received remarks in this forum because I used the wrong terminology.

In order to get an extension of stay based on retirement (which would be the same as a renewal of a retirement visa in other countries, but please bear with me), you need to prove that you are still over 50 (no cheating), and that your income - or the money in the bank, seasoned for 3 months - is still the same. In fact, it is the easiest way of extending your stay.

What do you mean by "file the papers etc from scratch again"? What papers, apart from your passport and the income statement / bank account did you have to bring?
