i live in rawai, too. and i agree, there are many soi dogs in the area. unfortunately, one more than one occassion, i have called both PAWS & Soi Dog to see what help i can get...PAWS said, "we are not a shelter" and Soi Dog never came. it's sad really, because i do believe in what soi dog is doing, i just think they are extremely overwhelmed.

I also live in rawai off of soi mangosteen and there are many dogs around here. one thai family had to move and leave 3 four month old puppies behind i have been feeding them for the last month but last week 2 of them became ill to the point they couldnt move . So i took them to paws and they have been caring for the dogs with no questions asked i asked them if i should bring the other puppy in but they said they can only take them if they are sick or injured because they do not have space. i think they do a great job with the facilities they have and if you know of a sick or injured dog bring them to paws and i think they will help as much as they can

Distemper is contagious and while you may not have any sympathy for the soi dogs that are suffering due to no fault of their own, the disease can also affect animals that are owned so be sure your dog gets its vaccinations.

And if soi dog is so overwhelmed and the problem so bad, perhaps you could contact them and see what needs to be done to help.

i am aware that distemper is contagious, thank you very much. as previously stated, i have contacted soi dog on more than one occassion. it's not their fault if they are overwhelmed, and i was not implying that.

i take care of five soi dogs...they were left behind by a burmese worker's camp when they were puppies and sleep on my porch every night. i give them tick medicine and often try to bathe them...i was never able to find them proper homes. two of them had babies a few months back, and i did find homes for them. i have been trying to get help to desex them to no avail.

so please don't assume that i do not have sympathy for soi dogs or stray animals.

i live not far from you then! i am glad to hear that PAWS was helpful and that the puppies are being taken care of. i had a similar situation with two different soi dogs giving birth two weeks apart...i used facebook, thai visa and chicky net to find all the puppies homes! hope the last one you are taking care of gets better!

What is needed is a cull. Not very PC, but, true none the less.

They had to cull badgers in the UK for bovine TB and badgers are more valuable to the environment than stray dogs.

Posted

actually, culling is only a very temporary solution, Phangan Animal Care on Koh Phangan proved spaying and neutering of strays on a systematic basis was far more effective over the long term. Visiting temples and sterilizing all temple dogs, and re-visiting those temples later to get more. Offering low cost sterilization for pet owners as well.

Sterilization stops distemper? That's a new one.

Must get the wife done, then.
