Iran a democracy ? Yeah, I guess, if you consider that the ruling mullahs decide who gets to run for office and who goes to jail for opposing their viewpoints.

If you consider that there is really only one party to vote for, as any other party that tries to start up is quickly squashed by Internal Security (on orders from those mullahs).

If you consider that regardless of what the "politicians" think or do, nothing happens unless approved by the mullahs.

Why do so many communist countries put the word "Democratic" in their title ? (or at least they used to). Yeah, you can vote for members of the local Politburo, but it's pretty much meaningless, as the leaders retain absolute power in any event.

Saudi Arabia ? Yeah, they fit the bill according to the previous poster, but they are also one of the largest buyers of American military hardware, they allow American military to be stationed in their country, and they supply a large percentage of the oil America needs.

One thing that doesn't seem to get mentioned regarding the US led invasion of Iraq. Israel.

Iraq (and So-###### Insane) was one of Israel's most dangerous enemies. Allowing Saddam to stay in power would have gauranteed more attacks directed at Israel, and if So-Dumb had ever actually got his hands on a WMD, no doubt he would have fired it at Israel.

What would all the nay-sayers be saying now if that had of happened ? Probably a good lot of them would be criticizing the west for not doing something about Sadam earlier.

Like I said, the American public will wake up from their dreams when the GIs leave Baghdad Saigon style.

Will Iraq be better off as an Islamic state like their Iranian neighbors ? maybe not so bad. Iranians seems pretty happy with what they have. It's not the best, but at least they are not being mass murdered by their own leaders or bombed by their liberators.

However the slightest whisper of such a thing in Iran - will find you arrested, beaten and thrown in jail quicker than you can retract what you said. Def no democracy there - one party and one govt line.

I would have thought that when you are at War, you would use all the resourses available to you that might cut down on your own casualties.Funny way to fight really, maybe they should have armed their guys with pocket knives.

I think you are not getting my point here. They attacked a weak ennemy who can only fight with WW2 riffles. I have a very good friend who is Iraqi Caldean (i.e., and Iraqi Christian), whose family immigrated to the states from Iraq when he was 9 (just before the time Saddam came into power).

The stories of persecution and hatred of the Caldeans by Saddam's regime are incredible. Thousands and thousands of people murdered, tortured and imprisoned simply because of their spiritual belief. I can guarantee you the vast majority of Caldeans, save perhaps one (Tariq Aziz) were absolutely thrilled to see Saddam removed from power.
