Vocational School Shooting Leaves 1 Killed and 2 Injured

A former vocational college student has been killed and two others injured in a fight with students of a rival school.

Twenty four year old Cherdchai Chaiphak, a former student of Pathumwan Institute of Technology, has been shot and killed in Chatuchak district of Bangkok by students from a rival school.

A witness said the two unidentified gunmen, travelling on a motorcycle, opened fire on Cherdchai and his two friends, while the victims were riding on Soi Vibhavadi Rangsit 36.

The two friends, Narin Tokao and Ponprom Srirayayon, were badly wounded, but managed to take a taxi to a nearby hospital.

Since inter-school brawls between relatively small groups of kids are on average far deadlier than most sizable political rallies, shouldn't there be more focus on these kind of stories?

Why isn't there more investigative journalism here? Interview teachers, interview kids, get stats on the worst areas and schools with the worst reputation, look into the motivating factors and characters involved etc etc. But there's none of this.

It appears that the lives of a-political kids have no value to those who would need a real reason to get upset about their deaths.

The continue fighting and killing among rival students is a perfect mirror of the today's Thailand :(

It's a sad and unfortunate reflection on the level of conflict and violence throughout the world. Implying that it is somehow unique to Thailand or that Thailand is different from the rest of the world or that Thailand is less civilized than the mythical marvelous non-Thai world in this regard is just not true.

"Children" learn how to resolve their problems based on the methods they witness others using, including what they see on TV, movies, video games, in the news and in their own homes and neighborhoods, but the poor examples Thai young people see go way beyond the borders of Thailand.

To learn something and improve?! The "Mai Pen Lai" and "Kreng Chai" attitude they have does them far more damage than good. That's for sure!

Well, I only go back to 1985, but I'm certain these inter-school rivalries have existed far longer than that. As to the origins, I have no idea.

If penalties for carrying guns, were severe and implemented in full, with no possibility of paying your way out of it, or knowing some bigwig, then I believe we would see less of these problems. However this is unlikely to happen, and if the deceased's family are offered enough money (as is frequently the case) they will likely as not accept, and the culprits will go scott free!

Murder is murder. It does not matter who you are or who you know! It should be life imprisonment or capital punishment!

It is a reflection of society, in general, no matter the country. When in the US, I walk the dog while armed due to street thugs and gang-bangers and I live 40-miles North of the Metro-Atlanta perimeter.

A 24 year old is not a school student. Not unless he is academically challenged and his mother would let him leave school until he actually passed his exams. In that case most Thais would still be in brown pumps and scout uniforms long after their 21st. Or am I wrong in thinking thta the average Thai mother would actually insist her child do something?

Neither was this an attack at the school or witnessed by students leaving the school. Unless of course the rest of the thousand plus students were following 4 to a motorbike. Possible I know. It was an attack on three persons; two of whom one presumes were wearing the Vocational uniform.

If it is rival school shooting then it reflects a failing in the Thai system. We all know of the great red yellow divide. Perhaps that is an inevitable escalation from school days. Hate your neighbours, hate your fellow students, hate your work mates, hate society. At least any version that you don't sign up to. Simply, it's a rich going somewhere and educated versus a thick, going nowhere and ignorant. Can't see that one being resolved anytime soon. Hardly going to sit down and discuss literature. Thais confine their reading to those small comic books and the text on an SMS.

Apparently normal behaviour, by apparently normal people is to follow your enemy and open fire. Thai youth doing what it does rather well; get hold of a gun and go shoot basically anybody. That seems to explain the American way; the right to bear arms. The availability of guns. The same example, if you don't like it - shoot it, that adult society shows them in so many guises; from cars, in airport car parks, on the highway, from the motorbike, at the bus stop.

The huge and ridiculous list posted by Suradit has no bearing on this case. Psychotics in US schools that perpetrate in house, on their own killings aimed at including their teachers can not be connected with or compared to these relatively unplanned, random shootings. Furthermore, these Thai attacks are usually confrontational, gang on gang and away from the instituion.

What should be focussed on is the Thai failure, less than one week on since we last read of another school brawl killing, to stop a similar incident. However, this type of random drive-by settle some grudge [conflict] shooting is virtually impossible to stop. Unless you do believe in Spiderman, Superman or Batman. I don't think anyone believes in the detective and prevention abilities of the Thai Police Force. Anyone aged 5 or above that is.

The psychotics of American society are relatively few as are the ferociously angry nutters in Thai society. However, unlike America which tries effectively to spot, intervene and punish their pariahs, there is no hope of this in Thailand. It is a vengeful, face save, furious society where rage ripples the surface. Hence, all Thais are vulnerable to such an outburst as all Thais are repressed emotionally, inhibited, suffering high stress levels, unfulfilled, morally bereft, shallow and largely amoral. Then there are the negatives, which I won't bother to list.

When there is no hope of detecting and preventing such mindless acts, remember thy can't get folk to obey red or green lights, we should at least take some sliver of solace that they at least target other students and do not wage their wrath on the rest of us. Not yet anyhow.

So much for the Buddhist influence on their lives, or can they square such actions, an eye for an eye, a murder for a you looked at my girlfriend, ate my som tam, got bigger dick, within their religion?

I don't know and little do I care.

Thais are poor innovators but excellent copiers. They particularly love to copy Americans. America made a cult out of teenage gangs with plays and films like West Side story. School shootings in America become global news, the occasional events in Canada or Europe rarely go global.

I don't know and little do I care.

With the section in red, you took the words right out of my mouth - gang-on-gang has happened everywhere during the sociological development of every society, and it is always highly organised internally, with rich sub-cultural elements. It has little to do with the explosion of a mentally-unstable individual who just can't take another minute of being a 'nobody', or a 'failure', 'loser', or a misfit - and of course they often attack their old schools or some convenient school - that's wher those labels were stamped on their heads. Your final sentence, "I don't know and little do I care"...mmm...I know that feeling, it's a pretty rational reaction to any length of time trying to maintain some kind of optimism in the face of the daily tide of shocking events in LOS. In another thread recently, I called Thailand a 'cruel' place underneath all the gold ornamentation, posing in pastel shirts, and anachronistic customs - and I was attacked by a few members, of course. Your : "It is a vengeful, face save, furious society wher rage ripples to the surface" is a brilliant, chilling sentence. And the stark contrast between the tenets of Buddhism and the great phrase, 'furious society' should be thought-provoking for everybody.

This is the most unfortunate thing about American cinema, especially the violent movies. Americans, and a lot of other people around the world, know it's just an action movie or a gangsta rap video, or whatever, and it doesn't pose as any sort of reality for the majority of the population. However, some people in some other countries don't know that, and they go around and start acting the same way. In most cases it's just comical, but a terrible side effect is when somebody thinks the violence in a movie is anything other than just entertainment. And, you see very sexually repressive countries editing out the nudity, but it doesn't matter if a kid sees someone get their head turned into a canoe. It's too late now, all that's left is for some cultures to grow up socially and get responsible.

Most societies change, for better or worse because of external influences. Of course this doesnt usually happen immeditately and sometimes not in the lifetime of the people who are trying to change things. The important thing is that you should care about what goes on in the world and try to make a contribution, however small, towards improving things. This kind of insular "its a Thai problem let them deal with it" (or could equally be "its a US problem, UK problem, Chinese Problem...." is what is going wrong in the world today. We dont belong to a country just because of an accident of birth, nor for the same reason do we own that country, we are part of the world around us and of the places we choose to live. A Thai living in the UK can, and should, express their views about what goes on around them, so why is it wrong for a Farang to care and show concern where high school kids are shooting one another or when people rioting in the streets.

This comment maybe says more about the person who made it than it does about the topic under discussion.

It's more complicated than that. I understand your perception of it, but if you've ever seen how sacred children are to them, especially protecting the head, you might see it differently. They certainly don't dwell on death like some of us from the west. They also don't give each other big hugs and kisses for greetings and goodbyes. It doesn't mean it's not in their hearts. They just express themselves differently, that's all.

My beloved Costa Rica it's 19th... above some incredible names on the list and as much as I would love to be surprised or even upset, sadly, numbers seem about right in a country that is suffering deeply from a terrible lack of direction (mediocre governments) and an accelerated lost of family values... with a high influence of easy -hot- money... :(

I think it is a very fine thing that these guys shoot themselves as early in life as possible.

Personally, I think they should give them all a session with 9mm Glocks just after they have played the national anthem in the morning.

Those who have problems controlling their temper will quickly be eliminated, and the gene pool can only get better.

If not, they might go on to be uncontrolled drivers or worse still, become national politicians.

That's some good research, But the truth is that Thailand has a 8 to 100,000 murder rate and the US has a 4 to 100,000 rate.

That's double. The other thing is that these killings are school rivalries, most of the cases you quoted are not. There is a difference.
