Deputy PM Supports Joint Registration of Preah Vihear Temple

The deputy prime minister in charge of national security has pledged that the government will not disperse the protesters by force, and expressed support for the Thai-Cambodian joint registration of the Preah Vihear Temple as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Deputy Prime Minister in charge of the national security, Suthep Thaugsuban, said he has talked with the police chief about how to oversee security at the People's Alliance for Democracy rally, to prevent violent incidents.

Suthep insisted the government will not disperse the protesters by force.

The deputy prime minister also expressed support for the proposal by 2nd Army Commander Lieutenant General Tawatchai Samutsakorn for a joint Thai-Cambodian registration of the Preah Vihear Temple as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Suthep cited that a similar deal was proposed before in the Thai-Malaysian joint administrative region.

However, it remains to be seen if the idea will be well received by Phnom Penh.

The Foreign Ministry will be tasked with the negotiation.

Regarding the security situation in the southernmost provinces, Suthep consulted with the Army Chief of Staff General Dapong Rattanasuwan about how to increase the armed force's capability to protect the public and gather intelligence.

The deputy prime minister admitted that there are some ill-intended groups who aim to incite religious violence and that the Buddhist and Muslim leaders are well aware of this.

Suthep ensured that the government will not exercise extrajudicial punishments on the insurgent groups.

Instead, the criminals will be dealt with according to the law.

Yes there has. according to a article in the BBC it would appear Thailand was the aggressor.

The yellow shirts out to be happy. They all most got there way.

At least there is someone at the top who has the intelligence to try to push for mutual compromise.
