Is Chaing Mai Full Of Pot Heads And Hippies?

Another topic and the responses in it about a drug bust has got me thinking about who really are the expats living in CM. A few years ago I have bought a nice spacious condo with the thought of retiring to CM for 3-4 months a year when I finish my professional working life. The thought of having to socialise with potheads and stoners really doesn't float my boat as I deal with the downside of drug addiction and lifestyle on an almost daily basis and don't need to be reminded when I have finished my career.

So is the place full of stoners or is there a normal proportion of expats in CM and the vocal minority are giving a false impression of the expat scene there?

Police Arrest American Man Openly Smoking Marijuana on Walking Street

On Friday night a male American tourist with the appearance of a Rastifarian was arrested for openly smoking marijuana in the area of Pattaya’s Walking Street.

Pattaya, November 18, 2010, [PDN]: At 11.30 pm, on 17th December 2010, Pattaya Deputy Police Investigator, Captain Tanasit Geanleum, received a report from a patrol officer, who had detained a male tourist for smoking marijuana in Soi 14 on Walking Street. A team of officers was sent to assist.

At the scene they found an American man, Mr. Igan Hernandec [36], who had the appearance of a Rastafarian, and was clearly intoxicated. In his possession they found 3 gm of dried marijuana wrapped in a cigarette paper.

Police questioned the patrol officer, bar owners and bystanders who said the man was walking around, smoking the marijuana openly, and didn’t seem to care that what he was doing is illegal in Thailand.

Mr. Hernandec was arrested and taken to the Pattaya police station and was informed that he would be charged with the possession and consumption of a Category 5 narcotic.

Offence: Manufacture, import or export, sales or possession for sale.

Penalty: 2 to 15 years in prison and a fine of 20,000 – 150,000 Baht

Offence: Possession

Penalty: Up to 5 years in prison and a maximum fine of 5000 baht.

If the sbstance is “Kratom” [milder than Marijuana], up to 2 years in jail and/or a fine of 1000 Baht

(If the amount of Category 5 Narcotic is more than 10kg the offence is deemed as possession for sale).

Offence: Consumption

Penalty: Up to 1 year in prison and a fine not more than 100,000 baht

(If “Kratom”, then up to 1 month in prison and fine not more 1000 Baht)

To be honest I hardly ever notice any potheads and stoner's, they are probably doing it where it bothers no-one.

However, as you say piss heads and boozers are in your face at almost every turn.

Just in case you're serious. Chiang Mai's expat population are not pot-heads or stoners, but rather a sober and sensible community. Given your previous posting history as revealed by Thunder duck, that should impress you. I wonder, though what you have got against 'pot heads and stoners' do they do any harm?

I would not judge Chiang Mai by the people here on Thaivisa. We don't represent the majority of expats here.....although some like to think they do.

In four and a half years in Chiang Mai I've seen one person smoke pot and one person try to roll a joint (are they called spliffs now?) in a bar. Both these people were tourists. There probably are pot smoking ex-pats, but it seems they have the good sense to be discrete.

There would a lot more pot smoking expats if it was legal. I don't smoke pot these days but many of my same generation friends in the US still do as we grew up in the flower power era. As foreigners here, I think many of us are more careful about this here than back home.
