In the last 72 hours I've been dismayed to find that two of the last refuges from commercial blather now feature televised crapola.

1) The Sukhumvit subway station (and perhaps others) now assault you with assorted foolishness. The glass panels are clever hi-tech stuff and easily ignored, but the audio portion is piped in over the loudspeakers.

2) I had the misfortune to ride what may be an experimental SkyTrain just after that. TV monitors are integrated into the advertising hoardings, 4 monitors per car with sound. I dearly hope this was a one-off.

Does anyone recall that old television programme called Max Headroom? The show once mentioned a fictional piece of legislation called the Compulsory Benefits Acts which made it illegal to produce a TV with a switch to turn it off. It no longer seems so funny...

Well, at least it beats staring at people around you... though it wasn't all that great either when on my last ride I happened to lower my gaze and saw the guy across from me staring at the screen, mouth hanging wide open while engrossed in some movie trailer. :o
