I have a DTAC branded Huawei E1553 aircard.

I'd like to pop a True internet sim in it.

I've googled the APN for True.

Do I need to flash the aircard firmware or will simply inserting a True sim and entering an unlock code work?

Helpful advice, here or by PM, appreciated.

Just use APN "internet" with a User Name and PW of "true" or "orange". User Name and PW should be same regardless of which one you choose to use. Leave other stuff blank and it will get from the system.

Thanks guys. I didn't get anywhere with True today, tried them at the airport mall and rang up their call center. Got statements like 'there is no 3G in Thailand' which I just hadn't allotted the time to work through today. Whether it was simple incompetence or a stubborn desire to set me straight on the semantics of 'trials' I have no idea. Asking them if we could look at their own website together - nah.

A few questions, then:

1) Is there a 'prepaid' 3G service available from True?

2) If 'postpay' is the only option, it's not really a 'contract' (in the sense of being locked into months of service with cancellation penalties) right? They just deduct from your card balance until a) you run out / stop refilling it or b ) ring them and cancel the recurring plan, is that correct?

3) Will any True sim work, once you call and activate it, or are there definite cost / speed advantages to having a specially designated 'internet' sim? Does such a thing even exist? I'll be using this in an aircard and not to make calls.

4) Finally, and you're quite kind to have read this far, what is the procedure for 'topping up' True 3G once you've got it working? Just stick the sim in a regular phone and add the minutes from a top up card? Then put the sim back in the aircard?

You want to purchase a True HiSpeed NEtSIM. You can purchase these at any mobile shop, 7/11 etc., but NOT at a true shop. This is a pre-paid 3G-capable "volume-based" SIM. These cost ~ 59 baht, and come with minimal stored value. Get some top-up cards. Activation instructions are on the packaging.

They have a current promotion: 349 baht/month

Other plans: http://www.truemove.com/th/wifi-edge-gprs-package.htm

Not sure about topping up, but the phone would work. I'm sure there are other methods.

I use this APN info.:

APN: internet

Username: true

Password: true

SIM Activation

Inquiry

Detail

Call charge

Via automated system 9300 Free

Via telephone Thai: dial #111# Call and follow the instructions on your mobile screen

Eng: dial #110# Call and follow the instructions on your mobile screen Free

1. Yes

2. Not sure

3. You can use a 49 baht True Inter SIM too

4. You can also top up remotely. Perhaps at 7/11s. You certainly can with DTAC.
