PM Ready for Talks with PAD Leaders

The prime minister says he is ready for talks with the People's Alliance for Democracy leaders on the ongoing border dispute with Cambodia, but warns the released information could put Thailand at disadvantage.

He adds all will be clearer about the Thai – Cambodian border dispute after the ASEAN meeting next week.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva welcomed talks with People's Alliance for Democracy, or PAD, leaders on the ongoing Thai – Cambodian border dispute for which the Thai Broadcast Journalists Association has offered to mediate.

Abhisit stated that if the PAD is prepared to exchange information, it must also take responsibility for the presented information which could put Thailand at disadvantage as well as stop attacking the government on the case of two Thai activists sentenced to jail by the Cambodian court.

As for developments on the Thai – Cambodian border dispute, the premier said that an official ceasefire has not been agreed upon as Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has not made his clear stance.

Nonetheless, Abhisit said the ASEAN meeting on February 22 will make the issue clearer as ASEAN members are encouraging bilateral talks between Thailand and Cambodia.

He added if a third country is to get involved, it should only act as a mediator.

Abhisit went on to say that Natural Resources and Environment Minister and Thai representative in the World Heritage Committee Suwit Khunkitti has told the committee that the listing of the Preah Vihear Temple has attributed to the current border tension and Thailand must continue to clarify the situation to other panel members.

As for representatives of the World Heritage Committee planning to visit the disputed area, Abhisit said it has not been confirmed while Suwit said the visit may cause further tension.

Pandering to them gives them credibility and these people are dangerous and living in the past.

The reluctance to punish them for their crimes has emboldened them and also set a bad precedent.

Unfortunately the PAD are one of the reasons Abhisit and the Democrats are in power so they have leverage and Abhisit has to pander to them to some degree.

They also have a lot of deluded but influential supporters in the higher echelons of Thai society and the military that Abhisit needs on his side.
