Does Your Tg/tf Play Cards?

the wife likes to have friends over to play cards and the games sometimes last 2 days. These are all friends that I know as well and the pot never appears to exceed 200 baht. I asked her about the illegality and she said not to worry. Anyone know of these little card parties getting busted? Would be a bit of a mess for a falang if he was living in the premises...

When we head out to our house in Petchabun at the weekend, most of the women (but not my wife) are to be found playing cards or high-low. The local police let it go as they get a percent of the pot or are related to the host. Occasionally other games are busted though and i've seen old women clambering over fences etc. to escape a raid.

The only problem i have with it, is that the games -" bok ding" and high low are so simple and boring. I don't understand how they play for so long. More of a social thing i think.

the card games have been ' busted in my wife's village a couple of times', the games were held in houses out of sight, the reason they get busted is jealosy within a small community, in the village life you can not trust a lot of people,

playing cards unfortunatey is just not worth the hasstle in thailand

(tf should read TB) :D

If so,are you happy with that?

Did you have to remind me? :D My wife has previously lost an apartment, a car, a motorbike, a business and about 400,000 baht. She was convinced it was just bad luck until I showed her card manipulation and counting, which to my shame I was taught when younger by a casino shark. I have watched a lot of thai card schools and there are normally at least two scammers working together :o

My wife loves playing cards (very noisily) and Marjon, avidly follows any lottery and any other game of chance. I've taken her horse racing on business trips - she loves it but it leaves me cold. She goes thru' my betting slips and usually finds that I won something somewhere!

She wants me to take her on a cruise from HK to Vietnam :o

It is more than jealousy. The police do pay informers.

The current GF doesn't, but the previous one did. It was ultimately one of the factors that drove us apart.

They were playing in the carport of a house once (in plain view during the light of day... stupid) when the police happened by- they took all the money on the table, and fined each player 200 baht on the spot.

I'm not a gambler in the first place, so when she would lose all her $$ and come crying, all she would get from me is a big SOM NUM NAAA!

There is nothing in the world I resent more than gambling.

When I discovered a deck of cards in the house, they were promptly shreaded. GF complained, but not much after she had to eat and swallow the last hand. 4 years on, no cards, no gambling.

Sorry, when it comes to playing luck, I just hate that standpoint and go mad.

No, mine doesn't. I wouldn't have married her if she did. If she started I wouldn't put up with it.

I have a Thai friend who lost 100,000 baht a few months ago, in two days, when he was pissed.

Nothing but trouble when a previous gf did it, even the "good" girls get mixed up in bad company, especially when they are from upcountry in Bangkok with few friends.

But in saying that, I do like a flutter every now and then.

No wife dont like gambling apart from a weekly £ on the national lottery.(my pound...???)

When she was a kid her old man used to take her horse racing somewhere in bangers and she could never understand why he would drive her there but sometimes but had to come back in a taxi.

Seems that he had a old cadilac (must have been the only one ) and he would "lose it" but couple of weeks later it would appear again :o

For Asians, gambling appears to be genetic.

Pachinko slot machines and gambling chain (###### knows what else is in there, never been) shops make 29 trillion Yen a year, in Japan only.

In a perspective, adding up total revenue of up IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, Intel, Hewlett Packard, DELL...would be half of that.

Only in Japan, 29 trillion Yen is 4 times what the rest of the planet makes on gambling.

Those reporting non-gambling spouses are lucky exceptions.

My gf had to eat and swallow the cards. After only 3K baht damage. And she is on notice, monitored.

The love of gambling isn't just restricted to the Thais.

Asians make up most of the patronage in casinos all around the world. Here in Australia's casinos, huge numbers of Asians flock to the card and roulette tables with most of the poker (slot) machines being occupied by Asians.

The majority are Chinese nationals, but you can hear the Thai language being spoken in many of the groups.

I personally know of Thai girls who enjoyed gambling in Thailand with the odd card game, coming to Australia with their Aussie husbands/boyfriends and becoming addicted to gambling. Such addiction is very hard to cure.

What is going to happen if Pattaya is granted a casino licence?

Just a question : what happens if you refuse to pay your debt when playing cards ? I am not talking of a few hundred baht, more about the ppl who lose cars, houses etc. Are the people obliged to pay by law ? At least in switzerland gambling debts are debts of honor, there is even a law that clearly states that you cannot force anyone to pay their debts..

So what happens, and i can well imagine that is not a purely hypothetical question, if someone refuses to pay ?

Right on britmaveric-

The answer should be obvious in a country where life is cheap and the police force is rife with corruption.

Less for mommy, the kids and the buffaloes.

Otherwise I think it could really boost tourism as not all tourists visit Pattaya for beer & girls.

What about drive-in weddings as the next step? :o

There are many countries around the world in which gambling is legal. For example, people in the u.k seem to get by ok with casino's in their midst. I am sure Thai people can also learn to control themselves. We are not talking about children here, and the vast majority of adult people are capable of showing suficient qualities required to adequately manage such an interest. At the end of the day gambling will happen in Thailand whether it is legalised or not. Some would argue that introducing a degree of legality would be a significant step in opening it up for significant discussion and education in the public arena, rather than the head in the sand approach, which neither removes the incentive (impossible), or informs adequately and honestly.

Pattaya already has casino games that are played every night in the bar areas.

The 'jack' has been around for decades. A bad dose is called 'blackjack.'

Sleeping bareback with multiple partners is referred to as 'russian roulette.'

The more active bargirls are referred to as 'poker machines.' (or slot machines.)

When a extremely versatile girl is found, it's 'bingo.'

An extremely non-versatile girl will give you the 'craps.'

Energetic male customers are referred to as 'stud pokers.'

A big spending customer is referred to as a 'money wheel.'

A twin act is referred to as 'two up.'

Pachinko slot machines

Took my mind back a few years, that one. It's got to be the most stupid ways around a gambling law i have ever heard :o

On topic:- My Mrs doesn't gamble in any way apart from the odd flutter on the Lottery. However, when i go to her village they gamble on anything, from Jenga to the dice game (can't remember the name) where you turn the numbers over from 1 to 9? I haven't seen any big card games on the go but i bet they'll be around.

Wife doesn't.

Wife's niece does and doesn't my wife "chuck a fit" when she finds out the niece is playing cards. :o It's about all the wife can do - unfortunately. Can't force her to stop.

In Oz we know some Thai's that can't get away from the pokies but near where we live in Oz, there is a large population of Hong Kong people who keep the local pubs in business and they very kindly support cheap pub meals! :D
