Is There Any Way To Make A Normal Song A Ring Tone

Featured Replies

As per the title - it seems you can't simply scroll to a song an "set as ring tone" like you can with any "normal" phone.

These things are supposed to be the best of the best ............ so far its just an over priced convoluted scam!

You are correct, there isn't a way that you can select a song as your ringtone just from itunes. However, you can download a ringtone maker. There are some that are .99 cents and some that are free.

Go to your app store and search for "Ringtone Maker" and you will see a list of options.

Yes there is... (and google is your friend !!! Search - make a ring tone for iPhone4 - I'm not sure if this works for iPhone3)

1. Open iTunes.

2. Find the song that you want to make into a ringtone.

3. Listen to the song and find the part of it you want to use. The chorus may be a good place to start.

4. Write down the start and stop times of the clip.

5. Right-click the song and select "Get Info."

6. Click the "Options" tab.

7. Type in the start time of your ringtone in the text box next to "Start Time" in the minutes:seconds (i.e., 2:01) format.

8. Type in the end time of your ringtone in the text box next to "Stop Time." Make sure the ringtone is no more than 40 seconds long.

9. Click "OK."

10. Right-click your song again and select "Convert Selection to AAC." Wait for iTunes to convert your song. It will create a duplicate version.

11. Right-click the ringtone and select "Delete."

12. Click on the "Keep Files" button.

13. Find the file. It's usually in your User folder under "Music > iTunes > iTunes Music" and under the band's name. It will have an extension of m4a.

14. Replace the m4a extension of your ringtone with m4r. You can either double-click slowly to rename your file, or right-click and select "Get Info" on a Mac or "Rename" on a Windows PC.

15. Click "Use .m4r" or the PC equivalent when the system warns you that the change may affect the use of your file.

16. Double-click the ringtone file. ITunes will automatically add it to your ringtones folder in your iTunes Music Library.

17. Connect your iPhone and sync your ringtones.

Richard, it even works for iphone1 :)

It's also the first set of instructions that comes up on a Google search...

I'm happy to help, but I'm not sure why people turn to a forum like this before searching for the information themselves on the internet (all I did was copy and paste the instructions from the website that I'd previously followed).

I agree with opening post, what a farce it is,when you can select a song on a cheap phone and just use it.

Not everything is perfect,

However at some spots i do disagree with the way apple inc. Goes, but on the other hand, why buy it then at the first place ? Apple offers everywhere to try things in the shops before buy it, the www is loaded with reviews.

After all the pro's are dominating.

There is no such thing as a perfect phone anyway.

Personally, I just don't like it (the i phone that is). Its a great toy, the camera is great, the whole touch screen thing is novel and works really well...... but for me, I just don't like the thing...... but my Mrs. thinks its wonderful, and it is her phone, so in our situation that is all that matters..... happy customer.

Richard,

Thanks for posting and to answer your question, the reason I tunred to this forum is that I googled it and found similar instructions that you have posted. I managed to create the m4r file and it automatically moves to the ringtones folder in i tunes as expected...... so then I sync the phone but then when I go to the ring tones folde on the i pod the ring tone that I made does not show up...... so I figured maybe someone could walk me through where I am going wrong etc.

I follwed you stpes, again I can make the ring tone in i-tunes, but when I synch the phone, it does not appear on the phone list of ring tones......

Any hints tips of help much appreciated.

Thanks for all these responses - I didn't know you can do it right inside of iTunes!

Here's what I used to do (can still do actually), but it only works on Mac OS X:

- Create a new project in GarageBand

- Delete all tracks

- Add a track with only the mp3 you want to use

- Cut to 30 seconds as you like

- Select "export as iPhone ringtone" which does what you'd think it does - it also adds it to iTunes
