TUCSON, ARIZONA (BNO NEWS) -- Jared Loughner, the shooter of the Tucson massacre during a rally of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, on Friday was charged with 49 counts by a federal grand jury, the Arizona Republic reported.

The superseding indictment includes 49 counts against the 22-year-old shooter for the murder of six people. Loughner was initially accused of crimes agaisnt five victims, who were federal employees. The new indictment added crimes committed all civilians in attendance at the event.

Under the new indictment, Loughner was charged with the murder of U.S. District Judge John M. Roll and Gabriel Zimmerman, a staff member and Director of Community Outreach for Rep. Giffords. Loughner was additionally charged for causing the death of participants at a federally provided activity.

"This was an attack on Congresswoman Giffords, her constituents, and her staff," said U.S. Attorney Dennis Burke. "The deceased are not the only ones whose rights are being defended. Those citizens who were peaceably assembled to speak to their member of Congress are also named victims in this indictment."

On January 8, Loughner shot at people attending a rally hosted by U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in a supermarket in northwest Tucson. Six people, including 9-year-old Christina Greene and Chief Judge John Roll, were killed and 14 others injured.

Giffords, who was hosting her first "Congress on Your Corner" of the year, was the target and was critically injured as a result of a gunshot to her head. The U.S. Representative survived is undergoing therapy in a Houston medical center.

"This indictment involves potential death-penalty charges, and Department rules require us to pursue a deliberate and thorough process. That process is ongoing, and we will continue to work diligently to see that justice is done," added Burke.
