Recently I married my Thai wife, which was legal and we have the marriage certificates.

Does being married change my situation of 3 month visa renews based on child?

I'm kind of hoping that I can just do the reporting at Immigration instead of trips to Laos.

Any other advantages?

You can apply for a one year "Extension of Stay" based on marriage if you meet the financial requirements, 40,000 Baht per month income, or 400,000 in a bank account. That would solve the border run issue, would just need to do an address report every 90 days.

If you can show 40,000 baht per month income or 400,000 baht in a bank account then you can apply for an extension based on marriage and report to immigration every 90 days. Someone else should along.

You would need to apply at Thai immigration for your extension of stay during the last 30 days of your current permission to stay, bringing with you the wife (for interview and to sign affidavit), her ID card, tabbien bahn (house book), marriage certificate, photos together around the home, map to home, completed application form TM7, passport, copies of passport/TM6 departure card and current passport sized photos. If using the bank balance option you will need a letter from bank confirming the account balance and copies of bank book. If using income option you will need to obtain an income letter from your embassy if income is from overseas. Cost 1,900 baht. Most offices are now asking also for Kor Ror 2 (copy of marriage register entry).

You will get a 30 day under consideration stamp and immigration will give you a date to go back and get the remainder of your extension. You can renew your extension of stay each year as long as you meet the requirements. You will need to report your address to immigration every 90 days but do not have to leave the country. For most offices 90 day reporting can be done by post. If you plan to travel abroad during the period of the extension you will need to obtain a re-entry permit from immigration to keep your permission to stay alive. Fee 1000 baht single entry; 3800 baht multi entry.

That all sounds fine, but what if as in my case I don't have the 400,000 in the bank and get less than 40,000 per month?

You asked about advantages to being married and got it. Only other option if you had 100K in the bank is, you could get a one year multiple entry Non-Immigrant "O" Visa in KL, Malaysia. Still would need to do a border run every 90 days though, just exit and re-enter. If making any entry just before the expiration date, you could stay about 15 months before having to apply for a new visa.

As said, with 100k in the Bank plus documents you could obtain multiple entry Non-O visa from KL on basis of Thai wife. But you would still have to do border runs every 90 days, which you were seeking to avoid.

If there are ways to make my life easier here, then I'd like to take them, which is why I asked the question. I thought there might have been a few advantages listed once married, but couldn't find.

Thanks for the info. The 100k in Thai Bank is a possible idea, how long does it need to be in the bank for?

That might make life a bit easier and is better to get rubber stamps in my passport than to fill two pages with visa stickers every three months. Of course I'd have to suffer the visa run vans with the occasional stinking drunk customer.

Also, now that we're married, can I get my name on the house book?

The 100,000 can be in any bank and there is no time limit as to how long it has to be there.

The Multi Entry Non Imm O Visa would give you up to 15 months but need a border run every 90 days as you know.

As for the House Book. You should be able to get your own yellow book.

Depending on where you live will decide if it is worth the bother. Some places make it quite easy while others make it so difficult many do not bother.

There is a pinned section Here about the Yellow Tabbien Baan.

As for the visa trips you do not have to use a van in most areas. Most places have public bus/train service which may be less confined. You can also buy the smelly incense tubes most Thai use in such situations.
