CHENGDU, CHINA (BNO NEWS) -- Rescuers in southwest China are searching for six people who are believed to have been buried after a landslide on late Tuesday evening, state-run media reported on Wednesday.

The state-run Xinhua news agency said the landslide occurred at around 11.20 p.m. local time in Wuquan Township near Guangyuan City, located in the country's Sichuan Province.

Xinhua cited the press office of the county government as saying that an estimated 2 million cubic meters of sand and stones came down a hill in the township, affecting at least five houses and leaving six people missing.

It was not immediately known what caused the landslide, and a search and rescue operation was ongoing on Wednesday evening.
